Maternity and political representation: speeches and performances in parliament and on Instagram
Political Representation. Maternity. Image Construction
This work intends to shed light on the perspective of motherhood in politics. More specifically, we start from the following guiding question: How is motherhood being represented and capitalized on by political agents in Brazil? The main objective is to understand motherhood as an element of political identity and as a producer of its own social perspective. The methodology will be formed by three complementary fronts. 1 – An analysis of parliamentary speeches, in order to understand the representation of motherhood in the Chamber of Deputies (Lower Chamber); 2 - The second methodological front is an analysis of the Instagram profile of eight political women, with or without a mandate, from both the political spectrum, i. e., from right and left wing, in order to observe how motherhood is being capitalized on the construction of the image of these women; 3 - The last methodological front is an in-depth interview with key political agents, which aims to deepen the perception of how motherhood affects the political career of these women.
