SUMMARY:

Slope failures are a natural phenomenon that occur naturally or by anthropic activities
and that can bring relevant social and economic consequences to Brazil. Economically,
slope failures may hazard oil, gas, and derived products transportation inside the country.
The transportation operation depends on pipelines that area implemented on unstable
mountainous region that covers the Brazilian South and Southeast coast region. Historical
registers of slope failures bring special attention to the pipelines crossing the Serra do
Mar region in the São Paulo state coast. This PhD Thesis deals with the formulation of a
slope stability method in local and regional scale and it’s application on the risk
evaluation of a petroleum and gas pipeline corridor region on the Serra do Mar (city of
Cubatão, São Paulo, Brazil). The region is of high economical relevance since it connects
the metropolitan region of São Paulo with the Santos port. The study is performed for
hypothetical rainfall scenarios, and it results in maps of factors of safety, probabilities of
failure and failure risk. The rainfall infiltration is modeled using the tools of fractional
calculus, a mathematical field not yet widely applied to engineering analyses, despite
showing promising results. For compatibility reasons, a new bimodal soil water retention
curve fractional model is proposed. The point estimate method is employed to perform
the probabilistic study of the region. The monetary failure consequences are calculated,
and they are applied in the calculation of the failure risk. The failure risk is compared
with the best engineering practice and Transpetro’s technical standard limits to assess if
the hypothetical situation results in acceptable or unacceptable risk conditions.
