SUMMARY:

Proper characterization of shear strength properties of unsaturated soils may be essential for solving geotechnical problems such as assessing the bearing capacity of foundations above the water table, the stability of natural slopes, and the integrity of closure systems for containment structures. However, experimental determination definition of unsaturated shear strength is generally expensive, time-consuming, and challenging. Yet, since the shear strength of unsaturated soils is strongly related to their water content and, therefore, to suction, the shear strength of an unsaturated soil is expected to also relate to its Soil Water Retention Curve (SWRC). Accordingly, this study proposes a new model for predicting the shear strength (versus matric suction or water content) function of unimodal and bimodal unsaturated soils. The prediction model builds on Vanapalli’s shear strength model, and uses the SWRC and effective shear strength parameters of the soil. Based on these, new surface models of unsaturated shear strength and cohesion are defined and proposed. Some applications of these models are presented herein, showing a good fit compared with experimental data.
