SUMMARY:

In response to the challenges posed by the continuous increase in the generation of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in expanding urban contexts, this study proposes an innovative technical approach to the reuse of these materials. The aim is to explore the potential of CDW as alternative aggregates in asphalt mixtures, an area that has been gaining increasing attention in the field of civil engineering.
The research focuses on two specific granulometries of CDW. This choice allowed for a detailed comparative analysis of how different aggregate sizes can influence the behavior and properties of the asphalt mixtures. The morphological characterization of the CDW, performed using 3D scanning technology, was a key aspect of the study, providing valuable insights into the texture and shape of the waste. This detailed morphological analysis is fundamental to understanding the interaction of these aggregates with other components of the asphalt mixture.
An innovative point of the research was the application of the TERRAFIX additive to the CDW through an absorption process. This technique aimed to improve critical characteristics of the CDW, such as waterproofing and adhesion, making them more compatible for use in asphalt mixtures. The treatment with TERRAFIX represents an important step in the preparation of the CDW, as it modifies their surface properties and can improve interaction with the asphalt binder.
Laboratory tests focused on evaluating the mechanical performance of the asphalt mixtures that incorporated the treated CDW. Various tests were conducted to determine parameters such as stability, wear resistance, moisture damage, fatigue, resilience modulus, and tensile strength of the mixtures, among others. The results indicated that the asphalt mixtures with treated CDW showed promising performance, suggesting that this approach could offer a viable alternative to conventional aggregates, both from a technical and economic standpoint.
This study can significantly contribute to the field of civil engineering, providing a solid foundation for future research and practical applications. The reuse of CDW in asphalt mixtures not only presents a technical solution for the management of these wastes but can also lead to significant advances in terms of resource efficiency and innovation in construction materials.
