SUMMARY:

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, through the research project titled "Strengthening the Laboratory Infrastructure for COVID-19 Testing and Scientific Research," our team, a part of the Center for Research on Grand Themes at the Central Institute of Sciences of the University of Brasília, initiated studies on this novel and impactful topic. In this journey, we established a COVID-19 diagnostic laboratory using the RT-qPCR method and authored articles on the subject, with some already published and others in the process of publication or completion. The first study analyzed acute symptoms of COVID-19, their persistence during the Long COVID phase, and the correlation of memory problems with sleep disturbances, depressive mood, or anxiety complaints. The second study explored clinical characteristics of Long COVID patients reporting sleep and memory issues (cases) and found that the frequency of concurrent sadness and anxiety was significantly higher in this group compared to controls (without sleep and memory problems). A third study focused on olfactory evaluation in healthcare professionals, using the Sniffin' Sticks test, providing a better understanding of the performance of SS-16 in a young and middle-aged Brazilian sample. Finally, our latest study, still in the elaboration phase, investigates the impact of vaccination on long COVID symptoms in previously infected and unvaccinated patients. Preliminary results indicate a significantly higher incidence of headache, dry cough, shortness of breath, and anxiety in unvaccinated individuals against COVID-19, suggesting a vaccine-protective effect for these specific phenotypes. The conclusions underscore the complexity of long COVID effects, emphasizing the importance of in-depth studies to understand the interactions between symptoms, vaccination, and other factors associated with the disease.
