SUMMARY:

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric pathology that generates severe brain dysfunctions in its carriers. Because its etiology is still poorly understood, a branch that has been widely researched in the last decades focuses mainly on neurophysiological alterations. Among a range of dysfunctions, sensory processing alterations have gained relevance because they can be tested in non-invasive tests and with potential use as biomarkers. Previous studies have shown that patients with schizophrenia have an altered performance in tests with visual illusions, among them the Müller-Lyer illusion, which consists in the judgment of two parallel straight line segments, which despite having the same length are perceived as having different lengths. In previous studies, it was shown that capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) are also sensitive to this illusion, and that the administration of MK-801 (a glutamatergic NMDA receptor antagonist) decreases sensitivity to the illusion. The present work aims to study possible changes in visual perception in non-human primates of the species Callithrix penicillata (marmoset) in the Müller-Lyer illusion test, and to use MK-801 and ketamine (another NMDA glutamatergic receptor antagonist) to simulate some psychotomimetic signals, and to compare the actions of these two drugs. In this work, 11 individuals (4 females and 7 males) are being trained to choose the smaller of two straight lines, regardless of the context (i.e., orientation of the arrows) in the E-Prime program, which allows the implementation of the test and the manipulation of the visual stimuli. Subsequently, subjects will be tested on the Subjective Equality Point (SIP) with and without arrows, and after that they will proceed to drug testing. Preliminary results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in comparing the number of trials performed until reaching the learning criterion (established as the beginning of phase 1), with the age range of the subjects.
