SUMMARY:

"Bruxism is a parafunctional habit of the masticatory system. The etiology is multifactorial as it is associated to dental, psychological, neurological factors. The main psychological factors are stress and anxiety. Children in their first dentition can present this parafunctional habit and this condition can be related to it is growing phase or some external factor. The aim of the present investigation is to evaluate bruxism prevalence and its association to parental style in 5-year children.Data on bruxism will be collected as part of a longitudinal investigation of a cohort study. During the 4-year follow up, a parenting style questionnaire will be applied to parents. Tooth wear evaluation will be carried out using the standard classification and index by Smith and Knight (1984). The data obtained will be tabulated and submitted to a descriptive analysis of relative and absolute Frequency and to association analysis, Chi-square test will be performed. The prevalence and the etiological factors that have an influence on this condition will be analyzed. This will bethe first study in the literature to investigate parental style and bruxism."
