PAGES: 69
BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde
AREA: Educação Física
SUMMARY:

This project aims to study the social construction of the fat body of Miss Plus Size models in the
state of Ceará, considering sociodemographic aspects, affective relationships and their body
perceptions. It is linked to the Graduate Program in Physical Education in the area of
Sociocultural, Political, Pedagogical and Psychological Studies of Physical Education at the
University of Brasilia. It is justified insofar as it seeks to contribute to the specific knowledge of
the fat body and its affections in a sociocultural view. In this sense, the experiences constituted
in their corporeities propose reflections for Physical Education, contributing to social issues and
their corporal practices. Considering this way of registering the social representation of the fat
body and obesity, the Plus Size theoretical field is still little discussed in Brazil, especially when
related to issues of body and Physical Education, being necessary to think and reflect on this
area. Given this context, we sought the contributions of authors who will better help in the
understanding of this research, such as Le Breton (1991; 2003; 2007), Mauss (1974), Michel
Foucault (1997) and Mirian Goldenberg (2014), as they discuss the approaches to corporeality
from modern social arrangements. Vilhena and Novaes (2012), Vigarello (2012), Fischler
(1995), Poulain (2013), Sant'anna (2016), Bento and Mélo (2019) and Jimenez- Jimenez (2020),
to better understand the issues related to the fat body, obesity and the Plus Size field. Resende
and Coelho (2010) and Le Breton (2009) that help us understand the affective patterns and
emotions culturally associated with the experiences of fat people and people with obesity. This is
a descriptive and field study, outlined with a qualitative approach. Direct participant observation
and semi-structured interviews will be used as data collection techniques, understood as
important resources for understanding the research. The data collection will take place in the
State of Ceará, especially in the city of Fortaleza, from April to June 2023. Will be part of this
research, Miss Plus Size women over 18 years old, identified by different groups, following
variables of race, gender and social class, who have participated or will participate in some event
of Miss Plus Size Ceará Pageant. For the analysis of the data collected in this research we will
use three specific forms. The first step will involve the descriptive elaboration of the data on the
characterization of the sociodemographic profile. In the second part, to analyze the semistructured
interview we will use the software IRAMUTEQ (Interface de R pour L Analyses
Multidimensionnelles de Textes L de Questionnaires) and we will make use of the analysis of
narratives. All the procedures adopted in this research will follow the Ethics Criteria for
Research with Human Beings according to Resolution N° 466/12 and N° 510/16 of the National
Health Council. The project was approved by the ethics committee and available at Plataforma
Brasil on June 27, 2022, under the CAAE number: 58595722.2.0000.5540.
