SUMMARY:

Sports and body practices certainly represent an extremely fertile field to develop studies on the relations and representations of gender in contemporary society, because sport, particularly became a place of intense disputes over identity demarcations. The advancement of women in the world of sports is a phenomenon that demonstrates the current status of social and cultural changes in gender relations. One of the central issues related to the participation of athletes in high performance sports is associated with the ways in which the subjectivity and identity of women are structured. We used the theoretical and methodological references of the sociology of the body, notably Beauvoir (1967); Connell (1995); Scott (1995); Le Breton (2003); Foucault (1987) whose focus is the understanding of the body, gender and sport in an expanded way and considering biological factors, as well as the media discourses related to women athletes go through judgments, cultural, moral and social meanings, which produce bodily ideals, as suggested by Novaes (2010) and Andrade (2003). As a researcher in the area of Physical Education, our intention, in proposing this theme, is to problematize to what extent body patterns are imposed on women athletes in high performance sport, especially when we consider the role of sports media in contexts such as the Olympics. Given the above, our research problem is: is there a body pattern established by society and propagated by the mass media to female athletes? How are media discourses (narratives) about the bodies of female athletes of high performance sport in the period before, during and after the Paris 2024 Olympics constructed and conveyed? The general objective is to analyze the body-gender relationship in high performance sport, considering the influence of digital sports media, found in sites specialized in sports content, in the definition of body standards for women athletes in professional tennis, according to publications made in the period preceding, during and after the Paris 2024 Olympics. And, we intend, specifically: to identify in digital media which are the main narratives (discourses) used to define the relationship between women’s body and high performance sport, considering them as units of meaning; to verify to what extent in these discourses (narratives) of sports media, expressed in units of meaning, are present aspects related to body patterns according to the roles socially established for women, using for both iconographic analysis (images). The analysis will occur through the technique of content analysis, according to Bardin (2016), through the units of meaning.
