SUMMARY:

Cerebral Palsy (CP) has an incidence of 2.11 for every 1000 live births in developed countries and is the most common cause of physical disability in childhood (OSKOUI et al., 2013; PATEL et al., 2020; SADOWSKA; SARECKA-HUJAR; KOPYTA, 2020). Postural balance, which is altered in children with CP, (NOVAK et al., 2020; SADOWSKA; SARECKA-HUJAR; KOPYTA, 2020) is determined by the capture of the characteristics and demands of the task and the environment, by the visual and vestibular systems, and somatosensory, integrated by the central nervous system (CNS) of each individual in the search to generate an adequate postural control response (SHUMWAY-COOK; WOOLLACOTT, 2010; WOOLLACOTT; SHUMWAY-COOK, 2005).

Among the different dynamic strategies to improve postural control in children with CP, the use of equestrian activities as a therapeutic resource has increased considerably in recent decades (WOOD; FIELDS, 2021). During hippotherapy, the horse's movements generate movements in the pelvis and trunk that resemble human gait, thus facilitating the integration of sensory and motor systems (GARNER; RIGBY, 2015; UCHIYAMA; OHTANI; OHTA, 2011), being extremely important in rehabilitation, especially for those practitioners who are unable to perform normal independent gait (LUZUM et al., 2023; SHAHIRI et al., 2020; UCHIYAMA; OHTANI; OHTA, 2011).

Therefore, this project is divided into two studies:

Study 1: Longitudinal and pre-experimental study with the main objective of describing postural balance and functional performance in children with cerebral palsy over a year of hippotherapy.

Study 2: Longitudinal and pre-experimental study with the main objective of describing the behavior of dynamic postural balance in children with cerebral palsy during different tasks performed in hippotherapy.
