SUMMARY:

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease that presents an inflammatory, demyelinating and neurodegenerative character of the central nervous system (CNS). It affects, preferably, young women aged between 20 and 40 years. The most recurrent symptoms, regardless of the location of the lesion in the CNS, are deficits in postural control, problems in motor coordination, gait deficits, increased perception of fatigue and depressive symptoms. These symptoms, alone or associated, may contribute to the reduction of physical activity in women with multiple sclerosis. Objective: To evaluate the postural control of women with multiple sclerosis with different levels of physical activity (PA), different degrees of perception of fatigue and depressive symptoms. Secondarily, to confirm whether there is a strong association between postural control, physical activity, sedentary behavior, fatigue and depressive symptoms in this population. Methods: Two exploratory studies were carried out, which supported the development of study 1, which is considered the final product. Exploratory Study A: Cross-sectional study with 25 women with MS divided into two groups, one considered with a high PA score and the other with a low PA score, in order to assess whether there is a difference between some variables from different domains (physical, cognitive and psychological) in these two groups. Exploratory Study B: Longitudinal study with 15 women with MS divided into two groups, one considered without walking disability and the other with disability, which were evaluated before the Covid 19 Pandemic (end of 2018) and shortly after the end of social isolation in Brazil (mid-2022), in order to evaluate the behavior of walking time, postural control, impact and severity of fatigue and depressive symptoms before and after this period. Study 1: Cross-sectional study with 24 women with MS in order to assess the existence and strength of association between postural control, depression, fatigue, physical activity and time in sedentary behavior in this population. Final considerations: With the results obtained in the two previous exploratory studies, it was possible to develop a project with a good foundation to answer the research question in question: which variables related to the physical and motor, cognitive and psychological domains are important to be evaluated in women with MS and thus, subsequently, to analyze the strength of association between postural control, physical activity, walking, fatigue, depression and time in sedentary behavior. These results may elucidate some different deficits and symptoms found in women with MS and may bring more effective results in the applicability of specific and individualized physical exercises associated with the medical treatment instituted for a given patient.
