The “Karo Arara”: senses and meanings of sport in the village

SUMMARY:

The general objective of the research is to analyze how the Karo Arara understand sport,
especially football, in order to verify how these phenomena are appropriated and allocated within
their sociocultural organization, as well as their influence on the establishment of ethnic and
interethnic relations. As specific objectives: to identify the conception of sport and football
among the Karo Arara; verify the existence of traditional sports practices; compare the
specificities of football practice between men and women Karo Arara; verify the involvement of
Karo Arara sports leaders in the context of local sports and leisure policies; to analyze the
implications of practicing sports and football for the Karo Arara in establishing their ethnic and
interethnic relationships. The methodology used for its achievement will be a multi-sited
ethnography. According to Marcus (1995), this method shifts from a single field and local
situations, which are specificities of conventional ethnography, to the investigation of the circulation of identities, objects and cultural meanings present in different times and spaces. In this way, the limitations imposed on the researcher by staying in only one place are broken, providing an opportunity to understand the relationships established by its object in different contexts. The data collection techniques used will be participant observation and semi-structured interview. The number of participants directly involved in the research, who will be part of the interviewees, will be a total of twenty, ten men, of which one sports leader, three community leaders (older and who can talk about the sport in the past), three involved with sports only in the village, three involved with sports in the village and beyond. And ten women, of which, one sport leader, three community leaders (older and who can talk about sport in the past), three involved with sport only in the village, three involved with sport in the village and beyond. Finally, we highlight some authors who will support the analyzes of the work: Santos (2015) regarding the sociocultural organization of the Karo Arara; Vianna (2001), Fassheber (2006) and Vinha (2004) that deal with sport and football in an indigenous context.
