PHILOSOPHY OF PRAXIS - The problem of human alienation in Karl Marx and Paulo Freire
Alienation, Dehumanization, Philosophy of praxis, Radical humanism, Conscientization
This thesis aims to elucidate the issue of human alienation from a Latin American philosophical perspective. In this regard, the quaestio rationalis that guided this research initially arises within the horizon of philosophical critique in Karl Marx and is subsequently deepened under the auspices of critical thought in Paulo Freire. In the face of this question, the proposed hypothesis aims to outline the pedagogy of the oppressed as a philosophy of humanistic and radical praxis. The Freirean theory thus constitutes a Latin American revolutionary praxis, aimed at raising awareness among the oppressed class in the face of capitalist alienation of labor and culture. Developed under the aegis of dehumanization, the notion of alienation in Paulo Freire incorporates various aspects of the aforementioned Marxian category, thus engaging in a critical dialogue of constant approximation and distancing. The itinerary for elucidating the proposed issue unfolds in four distinct moments, which, considered together, reflect the purpose of this research. In the first chapter, a preliminary problematization will be undertaken based on Karl Marx's concept of alienation. Subsequently, efforts will focus on investigating the formation of the pedagogy of the oppressed as a radical theory, whose inspiration, among other sources, claims the presence of a critical dialogue with Marxist literature. The second moment will address Freire's conception of alienation, situated within the dilemma between humanization and dehumanization. Therefore, the problem approaches from a philosophical perspective that unfolds in two fundamental dialogical dimensions, namely: i) philosophical anthropology and ii) philosophy of history. In the third chapter, a philosophical examination of the relationship between human emancipation and the religious question in view of the dilemma of human alienation will be conducted. Ultimately, we will proceed to a fulfil examination of the Freirean concept of awareness and its related implications. The methodology used will be bibliographic review. In order to promote careful heuristic expansion, the central works selected will be, respectively, Karl Marx's Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844 and Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Additionally, reflections within this philosophical inquiry require properly consideration of these authors’ other works. The accounts outlined in this thesis situate in the perspective that the pedagogy of the oppressed is a Latin American philosophy of praxis, oriented towards awareness, that is, towards the promotion of transformative actions and reflections that present themselves as radical and revolutionary alternatives to the problem of human alienation.
