SUMMARY:

External vertical wall systems made up of curtain walls made of steel and glass, after years of use, are vulnerable, as functional and technological obsolescence accelerates the need for retrofit. In Brazil, between 1960 and 1970, curtain wall in carbon steel was widely used in buildings of modern architecture. This built stock has been suffering degradation as a result of the passage of time, use, maintenance actions, and interventions carried out, which justifies understanding how the degradation process occurs over the years. Especially for this research, when the curtain facades constitute attributes that confer cultural significance to the assets that make up the cultural heritage building in Brasilia, there is a need to evaluate and plan conservation actions. In this sense, in addition to ensuring safety, user health, and functionality, interventions must consider the impact on the conservation of cultural value attributes. Through a systematic review of the literature, an integrated approach was not found involving the factors related to the structural system and the external vertical wall that affect the degradation of curtain walls and guide maintenance or retrofit actions. Another shortcoming observed in the RSL was the absence of an indicator that indicates the level of vulnerability of the curtain wall system. That said, this research questions how the computational modeling of the interactions between the structure and the curtain wall can contribute to the decision-making process on conservation, maintenance, or retrofit actions. The aim is to assess how safe and functional the different combinations of the studied factors can be. In this sense, the objective of this research is to evaluate how the interactions of the structural arrangements combined with the curtain wall influence the vulnerability of the facade, considering typologies, exposure conditions, orientation, and architectural constraints. Delimiting the field of study to analyze the behavior of the curtain wall of buildings facade, the sample will be composed of examples located in Brasília-DF. To this end, building inspections and a documented survey will be carried out, the data of which will feed into the modeling of the structural and external vertical wall systems. Using the finite element method, we seek to understand how the curtain wall binding model affects maintenance and rehabilitation intervention decisions or retrofits, generating a vulnerability analysis. Partial results indicate that the way in which the vertical fence is linked to the structure affects the occurrence of anomalies in certain regions, which require more frequent maintenance actions to guarantee the functionality of the system.
