SUMMARY:

Indoor daylight design should not be limited to energy performance and visual quality; it must also address aspects related to the health and well-being of users. The non-visual effects of light are directly linked to neuroendocrine and neurobehavioral responses, heart rate, alertness levels, mood, work performance and circadian rhythm. Therefore, when planning interior spaces, it is essential to consider not only the visual impacts of light, but also the non-visual ones. Natural light plays a vital role in regulating the circadian rhythm, responsible for coordinating alertness and the sleep-wake cycle, due to the 24-hour light/dark cycle of the day. Therefore, in environments frequently used in the morning and/or afternoon, such as classrooms in university - the focus of this study - it is crucial to implement a lighting project that favors this synchronization. This will provide students with a better quality of life and better performance in the learning process. Some architectural parameters, such as the reflectance of surface materials, the size and orientation of windows, among others, have an influence on the non-visual effects of light. In this context, the central hypothesis of this thesis states the possibility of establishing a correlation between these parameters and the assessment of the impact on the non-visual effects of light, taking into account exclusively the use of natural light. The general objective is to identify the architectural parameters that have a greater impact on the non-visual effects of natural lighting in higher education classrooms. The method adopted will include computer simulations, on-site measurements and statistical treatment to prove the hypothesis. At the end of this document, the results of the first simulations and final considerations on the progress of this thesis will be presented.
