PAGES: 83
BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Arquitetura e Urbanismo
SUMMARY:

The perception that a certain place is unsafe is a factor that considerably affects the quality of life of individuals. When inhabitants perceive an environment as unsafe, they adopt specific preventive behaviors, which can even affect the configuration of urban space, bringing negative impacts, such as abandoned areas, lack of public maintenance, depredation of heritage, large walled areas and lack of urbanity. In this context, the thesis aims to create a model in order to assess how the variables related to the perception of insecurity in the neighborhood, environmental characteristics of cities, data about real crimes and walkability relate. Given that few studies relate these different aspects empirically, with data perceived by residents and with environmental data, configuring a research gap, especially in the Brazilian context, configuring an original contribution of the thesis. This study is a continuation of a previous study where we worked only with the perception of insecurity. And it also fits into a larger research, entitled Healthy Urban Mobility, where subjective data on the perception of insecurity and walkability were collected. Based on the analysis of three neighborhoods, with the same social profile, in the cities of Florianópolis and Brasília. The cities were selected for convenience, as they are the cities studied in this research, as well as the six pre-defined neighborhoods. 2214 residents were interviewed during 2017 with the application of a face-to-face questionnaire in their homes. The data on criminal occurrences for the year 2017 are being provided by the Public Security Departments and the Military Police of the respective cities. Environmental data relevant to walkability and public safety were collected from satellite images and georeferenced according to the address of each of the residents and analyzer from buffers. All data will be georeferenced: subjective data (perception of insecurity and walkability), data from criminal occurrences, modeling and morphological analysis of each of the six study areas. In this way, the thesis will seek to analyze how variables of different nature behave and from this test hypotheses consolidated in the literature, in order to build and deepen a theoreticalempirical body.
