SUMMARY:

A traditional source of research in the fields of architecture and design are architectural project archives. Currently, this topic of specific archives has reached relevance and controversy in Brazil, especially after the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha entrusted, before his death in 2021, his entire collection of 8,800 drawings and sketches to the Casa da Arquitectura documentation center in Matosinhos, Portugal. The case of Mendes da Rocha's collection is one example, among many, that indicates a need for policies to preserve project collections in Brazil and for a closer look at material culture. In light of this, this thesis seeks to answer the question of how the archives that contain documents relevant to the construction of a history of modern furniture and design in Brazil, from the second half of the 20th century onwards, are currently being treated. It is important for this question to address different types of documentation: those relating to furniture projects (plans, sections, specifications, layouts), contract documentation, various notes and executed pieces - these are discussed, in the context of the thesis in progress, as a document. The object of study dealt with in the thesis is the physical collection on display and the existing documentation in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) - Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia. The time frame covers the historical period from the construction of the Itamaraty Palace, even before its inauguration in 1970, to the present day. Itamaraty has custody of all the documentation archived at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) in Brasilia. The thesis investigates how this collection has been identified, classified, catalogued, collected, preserved, kept safe, exhibited and disseminated, in view of the elaborate hypothesis that the building and its collection constitute a valuable archive for the history of the construction of the Federal Capital and Brazilian modernism. Could the Itamaraty Palace be considered an archive palace?
