SUMMARY:

Faced with growing urban expansion and continued rural-urban migration around the world, medium-scale human settlements have increasingly been housing demands for a better quality of life for their populations and greater socio-environmental quality, which gives them a relevant role in the debate on sustainability and the environment. Given this scenario, this research seeks to understand the attributes that qualify the improvement of the quality of life in cities, understood from their vitality and resilience, translated into perpetuity. The work takes as a case study twenty six urban structures distributed throughout the Brazilian territory, all classified as medium-sized cities in their areas of coverage. The objective is to identify configurational aspects that are peculiar or common to them, and that are capable of being replicated as attributes capable of guaranteeing or developing perpetuity. The research methodology adopts a literature review for the theoretical basis of the topic and is anchored in the technique of “Analysis of the Morphological Performance of Places”. There is an emphasis on the investigation of syntactic attributes, depending on Space Syntax (the Social Logic of Space), associated with a set of socioeconomic data. The hypothesis suggests that the longevity of cities is intrinsically linked to the quality of their socio-spatial and socio-environmental configuration attributes, which contribute to inducing and enhancing sustainable socioeconomic development in cities over time.
