SUMMARY:

The objective of this research is centered on the discussion around the political relations involving members of the ecclesiastical and secular powers, in thecontext of Galicia and the kingdom of León and Castile, in the 12th century. The document we seek to analyze is the Historia Compostelana, a chroniclewritten from 1107 onwards, at the request of the then bishop of Santiago de Compostela, Diego Gelmirez, which, according to our interpretation parameter, constitutes one of the most important records of the political and ideological daily life of the Galicia and the Castilian-Leonese kingdom. Our thesis aims todemonstrate that the parameters of organization of political and legal life in the medieval Iberian manorial – diocesan scenario are demarcated by demandsthat are constructed at the local level. Clergy, nobility and king are articulated based on their respective immediate material interests, where categories suchas conflict and collaboration are conditioned on the access of these segments to the mechanisms of appropriation and distribution of the landlord'smaterial wealth. Our proposal questions historiographical perspectives defended by historians such as Ermelindo Portela, Sylvan Gouguenheim andNiolangelo D'Acunto, who affirm the existence of a pattern of organization of political life that goes through a process of centralization of power withinthe Church, where the dynamics would be the fight against secular investiture and simoniacal practices. For us, both simony and lay investiture were onlyquestioned when the privileges of ecclesiastical authorities were threatened by the interests of the monarch and the aristocracy. What we are proposing isthat it is a political and economic dynamic of management of the bishopric that makes the diocese of Santiago de Compostela a landlord of a religiousnature, where the bishop is responsible for both the spiritual administration of his diocese and the administration of material goods. from the landlord. In thissense, we intend to demonstrate that Diego Gelmirez, presented by Ermelindo Portela as an agent of the Papal Reform in the Iberian horizon, despite hisproximity and alliance with the bishops who occupied the throne of Saint Peter, would be acting in the mold of an ecclesiastical lord, where What wouldprevail in the composition of their priorities would be the interests of the religious landlord of Santiago de Compostela
