SUMMARY:

This thesis analyzes historical pictures and the thought about them to interpret the patterns of visual representation employed in visualizing the past. It concentrates on the last decades of the nineteenth century until the middle of the twentieth, when there was a convergence between the making of national history in Canada and the popularization of images through illustrated books, magazines, newspapers, and the advent of photography. Scholars have concentrated on the role of images as illustrations or a medium for those who cannot read English to identify with nationalist symbology, bypassing image analysis and the discourse of those who created those images. Drawing on original literary, pictorial, and historical research, I have examined the graphic content of printed images and their production practices to shed new light on image-making applied to the broader context of visualizing the nation’s past. By examining the work of C.W. Jefferys and relating it to its peers dedicated to the production of visual histories, I bring attention to deeper problems in historical studies, such as the possibilities of visual representation of history, the dialogue between art and science, and the epistemological value of illustration. The book argues that pictures were conceived not only as tools for popularizing history but also ways of experiencing the past, conveying notions about it, and creating different historical consciousness, sometimes asunder from written media.
