EUGENIC STERILIZATION IN BRAZIL: A PROPOSAL FOR CRITICAL APPROACH TO SOURCES AND HISTORIOGRAPHY CRYSTALIZED (1889-1933)
Eugenics; Racism; Brazilian Republic
This dissertation aims to analyze the proposals for eugenic sterilization in Brazil between the years 1889 and 1933, a period called post-abolition inhistoriography. O time frame of the research goes from the proclamation of the Republic to the end of circulation of the Eugenia Bulletin and the launch ofthe book Casa-Grande & Senzala, in 1933, by Gilberto Freyre. We will include in our investigations a varied range of sources, such as texts from newspapersand books, as well as theses, bulletins and proceedings of conferences of societies, institutions and medical and eugenic associations. As a methodology, wewill use the perspective of studies of post-abolition, since we believe that there is a gap in historical studies in this scope in relation to themes linked toeugenics.
