SUMMARY:

This work presents new geological and geochemical information on the main mineral deposits of the Serra Leste region, in the Carajás Mineral Province, which stands out not only for the iron deposits associated with the mafic volcanic rocks of the Grão Pará Group, but also for the gold deposits associated with the metavolcanosedimentary sequences of the Rio Novo Group, such as the Cutia deposit, the metasedimentary sequence of the Águas Claras Formation, such as Serra Pelada and Elefante and, finally, other gold occurrences that are related to granitic intrusions such as those from the Formiga mine and the one in the SW proximities of the Cigano granite. In this region, the extension of the E–W- to NNW trending Carajás and Cinzento strikeslip systems is characterized by sinistral kinematics of approximate E-W direction, and the most prominent structural elements are the horsetail termination of Serra Pelada and the Cutia Fault. These two structures play an important role in the tectonic architecture of the region and were essential to favor the formation of gold deposits. The primary mineralization of Au-PGE from Serra Pelada is associated to carbonaceous metasiltistones located at hinges of the homonymous syncline and in Elefante only the supergenic mineralization is known. In the Cutia prospect, the host rocks of the secondary ore correspond to a gossanic sequence embedded in shear zones with similar characteristics of orogenic deposits. In the Formiga and related deposits, intrusion related mineralization is speculated.
