SUMMARY:

In the midst of a complex word that comprises at one end profound technological advancements mankind has achieved through the usage of scientific knowledge, exemplified by the development of machines that can mimic human interaction to the the world. On another end, mankind regress to primitive stages and use adjacent technologies to kill children in technological war. In this context, we propose to contribute on a different front which may help to extend the autonomy of machines by enabling them to become self-sustaining independent generators of energy for their own usage. Which represents quite a challenge considering the spectrum of devices that relentless demand reliable source of energy. Nonetheless, in our work we set sight on IoT devices that can be deployed in a standardized network architecture where our contribution could fit best. Therefore, through our research we implement an extension into the library of the Network Simulator 3 (NS-3) to enable the simulation of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) over IEEE 802.11 networks. In the following pages we provide a detailed description about the proposed extension regarding its major building blocks, its underlying mechanisms, and its response to Physical layer (PHY) parameters and modes of operation. Further, we discuss the development of new classes and other data types into the namespace of NS-3. Toward the end of our work we evaluate the performance of our implementation using standardized metrics that allow us to conclude that our implementation works in the scenarios used for its assessment. The outcome of this investigation is a full-featured SWIPT simulation environment that can be used for the design and performance evaluation of new SWIPT-based energy-efficient protocols based on IEEE 802.11 technology.
