SUMMARY:

Despite the fact that we cannot completely escape suffering, we continue to pursue an ideal of
satisfaction, of the stillness of conflicts and of the perfection of reality. Freud (1930/1996) tells us that the
psychic functioning of the human being is established intrinsically to the bodily functioning, being
organized according to the subject's incessant quest to obtain satisfaction and escape from what threatens
and makes him suffer. Apparently, these questions point to some kind of unconscious conflict. A certain
restlessness that seems to reveal a tension, marking the subject, from the body. We circumscribed the
research to the examination of the subject's desire from the fantasy of an idealized image of the body, and
together with this fantasized image a restlessness, for never fully reaching it, for always being that of the
Ideal body. For this undertaking, we took subjects who undergo bariatric surgery as an object, an invasive
proposal for the treatment of obesity that appears as a possibility when supposedly other less invasive
options have previously failed. Supporting the thesis that despite the procedure being justified based on a
health demand, there is in progress a process of aestheticization of the surgery in an attempt by the subject
to defend himself from the anguish of not knowing about himself, other than the starting from an image,
crossed by the other, who judges and questions. A subject's condition of being marked by a fault. A
psychic positioning that seems to circulate between the ideal self – an imaginary place conceived – and the symbolic ideal of the self. Thus, making this the first of other series of interventions in the body, in search of appeasing the anguish and what makes it suffer. Showing that as much as science advances and masters sophisticated body intervention techniques, it does not touch the structure of the gap between demand and desire.
