SUMMARY:

Infertility is a disease that affects 17.5% of people within reproductive age worldwide. Although there is treatment to overcome the condition and assisted human reproduction technology is rapidly evolving in terms of complexity and success rates, successful cases are still not the majority and access is limited due to the cost of the procedures, mainly. As a result, thousands of people go through a journey of suffering for many years, sometimes for a lifetime. The psychosocial impact of infertility has been identified as severe and its repercussions can include harm to the mental health of people dealing with the diagnosis. In a context of increasing infertility, the World Health Organization recommends making efforts to understand and address its consequences as a way of contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good health and well-being) and 5 (Gender Equality). The research is dedicated to understanding psychosocial needs, coping strategies and developing guidelines for professional action that contributes to promoting the mental health of women with infertility. At the heart of this research is the investigation of the emotional and psychological demands prevalent in women seeking motherhood. Furthermore, the study seeks to fill a gap in the literature by mapping mental health promotion actions, understanding the strategies adopted by some women, identifying areas in need of intervention and developing a practical guide based on best practices with assessment of their acceptability by women with infertility. It is hoped that this work will provide a solid foundation for addressing the emotional impact of infertility and thus contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to health and gender equality.
