SUMMARY:

The Psychiatric Reform, implemented in several countries, including Brazil, meant a review of practices in mental health institutions, previously marked by treatments that often disregarded human dignity. Criticism of these practices generated a mobilization of biomedical, legal and civil society sectors, especially individuals affected by psychological distress, in search of representation and attention that respected individuality. Despite the progressiveness of the Reform, institutional resistance to the abandonment of traditional treatment models is still present. Law 10,216/2001, in the Brazilian context, was a landmark in proposing the deinstitutionalization and social reintegration of individuals, orienting itself towards an outpatient care model. The term 'severe psychological distress' is proposed as an inclusive concept that recognizes the breadth of psychic manifestations and their relationship to the broad spectrum of human experience. This research highlights the relevance of phenomenological analyzes and reflections in the clinical context, constituting methodological tools available to the psychotherapist. The latter, in turn, is dedicated to the unique experience of each individual, aiming to promote continuous development in the way the subject relates and coexists with the world. The phenomenological methodology adopted in this study enables a detailed investigation of the subjects' experiences, facilitating an expanded understanding that goes beyond the limitations imposed by diagnostic categorizations. The present work investigates how Phenomenology can integrate care for individuals with severe psychological distress, proposing that listening and welcoming guided by this approach can offer new dimensions of clinical, relational, and existential understanding and intervention. Through documentary analysis of clinical cases and the researcher's institutional observations, we seek to elucidate how a phenomenological approach to severe psychological distress can help health professionals provide more effective care in critical situations, avoiding marginalization and worsening of psychological conditions. This research aims to demonstrate that a clinical practice based on phenomenology can be preventive, minimizing the possibility of stagnation of diagnoses as permanent conditions. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the consolidation of mental health policies that translate into social benefits, mitigating the incidence of chronic crises and promoting the comprehensive rehabilitation of patients
