SUMMARY:

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the literary corpus produced by the authors Juan Pablo Villalobos, Mexican, and João Guimarães Rosa, Brazilian, who approach in their narratives an overview of Latin American fiction using the self-referentiality, concerning the literary artistic creation. In this sense, we take as corpus the novel Festa no Covil, by the Mexican author Juan Pablo Villalobos and the short-stories “As margens da alegria”, “A Menina de Lá” and “Fita Verde no Cabelo”, by João Guimarães Rosa, with which we will discuss the way in which the child characters who are protagonists of our corpus critically dialogue with themes such as innocence and violence, in plots that flirt with characteristics of the fantastic, the unusual and the marvelous, aesthetic instruments widely used by Latin American authors. The main goal of this thesis is to discuss violence as a phenomenon that occurs at different levels of human life. It means, one can think about the situations of violence implicit in children's narratives, especially in the images of symbolic innocence that mobilize fantastic elements present in the selected corpus, as the two sides of the same coin: on the one hand, innocence and childlike purity of the characters and, on the other hand, child resistance in the face of extraordinary situations present in the texts. For the theoretical basis of this research, theories and assumptions will be used that can endorse the arguments that will become central for the confirmation of the hypotheses that will arise during the writing and reflection process of an in-depth research work, whose main hypotheses, the question to be answered is: is violence an aesthetic category in the construction of children’s imagination in the corpus under discussion? To give an account of the path, we will develop bibliographic research whose main methodological source is the delimitation and analysis of the corpus in the light of supporting theories. It is known that this is a terrain that moves at every moment and that walking on it requires a strength and a wealth of argumentation beyond what has been conveyed by the media, with which we live daily. Violence has become commonplace nowadays. However, the role of the intellectual, the philosopher, the researcher and other sectors of society as a whole, is to reflect, problematize, discuss and lay the foundations for the solution of what has been one of the most devastating phenomena of humanity, given its most different origins that range from a social, marketing, to the depths of the human psyche. Literature, as a mirror, mimesis, representation and other attributes that it has, does not shy away from its role and once again puts itself in a position of debate.
