“Only those who lived know”: the biographies of popular niche celebrities in Brazil
Representation; Subcelebrity; Literary field; Autobiography; Literature and media
We propose a study of the representations of popular media characters in Brazil, the so-called subcelebrities, through biographies and autobiographies published from the 1990s onwards and their positioning in the literary field. Seeking to investigate why the individuals portrayed in these volumes, disseminated in media with little analytical depth, resort to literature as a tool for exposing and broadcasting their images. When contemplating the literary insertion of these volumes in the field, we investigate how such works, whose objects are alien to the literary world, become viable in the Brazilian production and distribution market, and how they are received in the country. The study verifies if there are strategies common to the different texts and how these personalities are reconfigured when welcomed by the reader, a dimension that is not reached when they are rapidly consumed as products.
