SUMMARY:

Brazilian children's literature, in its beginning, was composed of fantastic narratives, being strongly influenced by European wonder tales and, later, by Brazilian folklore. From 1920 onwards, the scenario began to change, mainly due to the presence of Monteiro Lobato, who innovated children's plots by mixing reality with fantasy, in addition to bringing other elements that facilitated the identification between his characters and the children's audience. . Until 1960, the presence of the marvelous was easily perceived, in many authors besides him, however, from 1970, there is a rupture of this approach, giving space to texts that aimed at the representation of reality in an objective way, leaving aside, in the most of the time, any remnants of childhood myths.

Thus, this research proposes, firstly, to reflect on the builders of literature for children in Brazil in these two important periods for the definition of Brazilian social identity; then, to analyze some works by representative writers of the 1970s and 1980s, considered realists, or Marxists, as some called themselves, with the main objective of reflecting on the role of the marvelous, or the lack of it, in these narratives: O menino e o pinto do menino and Os rios morrem de sede, by Wander Piroli; Lando das Ruas, by Carlos de Marigny; Pivete, by Henry Corrêa de Araújo; Os meninos da rua da praia, by Sérgio Capparelli; and Tchau, by Lygia Bojunga Nunes.
