POST-COLONIAL MELANCHOLY OF IMMIGRATIONS IN MILTON HATOUM
literature and e melancholy; post-colonial melancholy; Milton Hatoum.
This research presents a study on melancholy in Milton Hatoum’s work, under the perspective of various theories about melancholy, mainly the post-colonial theory discourse and its approach in the effects of colonialism in cultures and societies. Wandering around with classical thinkers and dialoguing with philosophy, history and literature, we bring the following questions: how does melancholy manifest itself in Milton Hatoum’s work? Such melancholy will be related to the immigrant’s condition? Which kind of melancholy (disorder or creativity) predominates in his characters? How does contemporary literature insert itself in post-colonial discourse complement and validate one another? Such questions will guide our studies, not aiming to find irrefutable answers, but to contribute to the debate between literature, philosophy and history.
