SUMMARY:

This study arose from the translation of four short stories from Sagarana into French: "Sarapalha", "A hora e a vez de Augusto Matraga", "Duelo", and "Conversa de bois". In fact, translation demands a broad understanding of the text, of the way it was conceived, and of all its elements, that is, a critical reading of the literary work. Furthermore, the purpose of translation is to create a bridge between two cultures, two worldviews, highlighting the similarities and the differences. Through the translation process, it was realized that the culture and landscapes of the Sertão are integral parts of the author's poetry and metaphysical thought. In the scope of the theories of geopoetry, which seek to study the stories of these people from Brazil's countryside, often marginalized and poorly represented in national literature, we intend to analyze how different aspects of the life of the country people are poetically portrayed by João Guimarães Rosa. The writer from Minas Gerais collected in excursions in the Sertão and together with the region's inhabitants the material that would allow him to create a rich and complex work, whose purpose is to reflect and lead the reader to reflect on the human condition.
