SUMMARY:

This thesis, as a requirement for obtaining the PhD in Literature and Social Practices, aims to carry out both a critical and comparative analysis of the writing of the Portuguese author José Saramago, based on two key concepts: state of urgency poetics and realirism. The investigation begins, in its first chapter, with a theoretical exposition about the angst and anxiety of the present time and the type of aesthetic thinking, doing and feeling that it is imposed on the contemporary individual: the state of urgency poetics. Then, in the second chapter, it is pointed out, as an alternative to the tired, transparent and palliative art of the soci(ansi)ety, a literary form that, engaged with the present time, uses the state of urgency not as a means of escape, but as fuel for an aesthetic thrust that promotes questions about the role of human beings in the world: realirism. Continuing, chapter three is intended to reflect on José Saramago's narrative voice, questioning about its origin and inclination towards the future. Finally, in the fourth and last chapter, it focuses on the work of the Portuguese writer, identifying, empirically, in four Saramago novels (The stone raft, Blindness, Seeing and Death at intervals), the concepts presented in the three previous chapters. In order to do so, writings and other studies already carried out in the areas of Literary Theory, Philosophy, Sociology and History of Art are used as basis and support for the research.
