SUMMARY:

In this study, we discuss the constitution of the concept of the "tragic", its possibilities, and its developments based on the reading of a set of theatrical plays written by Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) under the denomination "Static Theater". Most of these texts by Pessoa were first made public in 2017 in one volume organized by Filipa de Freitas and Patrício Ferrari. Theater can be seen as the primary place for the manifestation of the "tragic" itself. Within this perspective, we seek to perform a reading of the writings of the Portuguese poet, considering their relationships with poetry, and thus, we aim to develop an analysis that primarily engages with the ideas of the Hungarian thinker Peter Szondi (1929-1971) as expressed in his work An Essay on the Tragic (1961). Based on bibliographic research, with an analysis of dramatic and lyrical texts, this study aims for a theoretical-historical review of the concept of the tragic based on the following authors: Emil Staiger (1975), Clément Roset (1989; 1991), Raymond Williams (2002), Ariano Suassuna (2004), Terry Eagleton (2013), Kathrin Rosenfield et al. (2001), Roberto Machado (2006) and Douglas Garcia Alves Júnior et al. (2007). Finally, with the intention of addressing Szondi's (1961) argument regarding the inability to grasp what the tragic is or its non-existence as a universal concept, we propose further points for the debate on the concept of the tragic. Drawing on ideas from Philosophy, we will explore the notion of a concept, supporting our inquiry with references to the works of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (1992), Frédéric Cossuta (1994), Benoit Hardy-Vallée (2013), and Walter Benjamin (2016).
