SUMMARY:

Under a scenario of global climate changes and with growing impacts of forest fires worldwide, different firefighting technologies has been used to prevent and control wildfires more efficiently. Among these firefighting strategies, we highlighted fire retardants.Although these compounds are not yet widely used in fighting wildfires in Brazil, they are commercially available and the majority data about these products focus on their efficiency. Aquatic organisms could be exposed to fire retardants through runoffs following a firefighting event or direct aerial application during wildfires, and few studies investigate the potential impacts of fire retardants on aquatic ecosystems, particularly in short, medium and long term in tropical regions.  Considering there is no regulation for the use of fire retardants in Brazil, we aim to asssess the ecotoxicological effects of different fire retardants on aquatic organisms of different trophic levels to contribute to the better application of these compounds near water bodies. Initially, a battery of acute toxicity tests has been performed with the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata, the microcrustaceans Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna, the embryo (Fish Embryo Test) and adults of the fish Danio rerio and the snail Biomphalaria glabrata. All these aquatic organisms are widely used in toxicity tests to identify the LC50 (Lethal Concentration to 50% of individuals). In parallel, physicochemical analyses of these products will be carried out to better understand their dynamics in the aquatic environment. In order to obtain a more realistic information about the effects of these compounds on aquatic biota, mesocosm-scale (multispecies) assays will be performed. Following, a risk assessment will be used in the case exposure scenario with the recommended concentration of fire retardants through direct aerial application. At present, we found a large variation in toxicities among the fire retardants and the test species and several firefighting retardants were found to pose hazards to aquatic organisms in a direct aerial application exposure scenario.
