SUMMARY:

The western Bahia has been a place of strong agricultural expansion since 1980s, mainly due to the expansion of soybean cultivation in flat areas known as plateaus. There are several studies in the literature mapping the space-time dynamics of this expansion through the satellite images with different image acquisition modes. There is evidence of recent expansion of land use in areas of depression, located in the eastern part of this region. Little or no attention has been given in the literature to this human occupation in areas of depression in western Bahia. Within this context, the objective of this study is to analyze the dynamics of agricultural expansion in the eastern portion of the municipality of Barreiras, Bahia, characterized as a region of depression. This study also intends to investigate the socioeconomic causes of this recent expansion, since, historically, these regions are considered unsuitable for rainfed agriculture due to the hilly topography and unfavorable rainfall regime. The following activities will be carried out: 1) analysis of the space-time dynamics of land occupation in the period of 1985-2020, based on the annual land use and land cover maps from the MapBiomas project; 2) validation and refinement of MapBiomas maps by analyzing higher spatial and temporal resolution images; 3) refinement of the legend proposed by the MapBiomas project, including, for example, the identification of types of agricultural crops, different levels of degradation of cultivated pastures, and changes in land use (for example, advance of reforestation in pastures); and 4) elaboration of a questionnaire to be applied in the field to investigate the reasons for this agricultural expansion in depression areas. In this doctoral thesis, it is intended to present the main results and analyzes of the research in two scientific articles, one in the area of remote sensing, presenting the spatiotemporal dynamics of agricultural occupation in areas of depression and another in the area of socioeconomics, presenting the main socioeconomic causes of this expansion.
