SUMMARY:

We obtained the information on accumulated annual deforestation between 1987 and 2019, the annual variation in the water surface area between 1985 and 2021, and the historical water flow series between 1980 and 2020, through data obtained from 21 monitoring stations located in the Araguaia River hydrographic basin to evaluate the historical variations of water flow and water surface. Our results indicate a worrying continuous process of reduction of water flow and flooded areas in this important basin over the last 40 years, with a reduction of water flow also consistent throughout all months, regardless of seasonal periods, but showing a proportionally greater reduction in the low water period, which coincides with the increase in water demand for the intense agricultural production. Our study brings important results that should be considered by governmental environmental control and monitoring agencies. Both the tributaries and the main channel of the Araguaia River are undergoing similar processes of reduction in water flow and the reduction in water flow has increased in all months, but greater reduction in the drier months. It is necessary to guarantee the ecological flow of this basin to minimally meet the demands of the aquatic ecosystem.
