SUMMARY:

Forest fires are frequent in the Cerrado and their high incidence causes serious environmental, social and psychological damage. The research aims to develop an integrated model to monitor and evaluate the effects of deforestation and forest fires in the Terra Ronca State Park, a cerrado area located in the municipality of São Domingos in Goiás-Brazil. The Cerrado is a vital ecosystem for the sustainability of vegetation, Brazilian biomes and many rivers springing throughout the Brazilian territory. Key tools used include advanced remote sensing techniques such as satellite image analysis, time series and vegetation indices such as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and NBR (Normalized Burn Rate). Kriging and cokriging, spatial statistical interpolation methods, will be applied to map the spatial distribution of soil data. The project will also focus on analyzing the spectral responses of the NDVI and NBR in the transition areas between forest and grassland, known as ecotones, in order to assess the impacts of changes in land use. Photographs of park areas before and after the fires also helped to provide a better basis for impact studies and verification of degradation of park areas. The expected result is the generation of a fire forecast map, a valuable tool for better understanding the effects of fires and for making decisions about conservation and management of the Amazon Forest.
