SUMMARY:

The Blue-eyed Ground Dove (Columbina cyanopis (Pelzeln, 1870)) is one of the world’s rarest and most endangered bird species, represented by a single free-living population, at the north of Minas Gerais state, with about 15 known individuals. Since its discovery in 1823, only 8 specimens were collected until 1941, after which it went through more than 70 years without documented records until its rediscovery in 2015. Currently, the remaining population is protected inside a conservation unit, however, this population still faces several external threats, such as annual burnings, exotic species and climate change, besides being potentially vulnerable to the internal pressures inherent to its population restriction, such as endogamic depression and genetic drift. The species has been subject to taxonomic debate but has never been the object of phylogenetic studies based on DNA sequencies. Furthermore, until recently its natural history was virtually unknown, but recent monitoring efforts indicate that its ecology is highly specialized, with strong associations with specific structural and floristic habitat components. This research, therefore, aims to: (I) analyze Columbina cyanopis phylogenetic relationships based on mithocondrial DNA sequencies; (II) to analyze the data accumulated throughout its monitoring, conjoined with modern drone mapping techniques, to detail its habitat use and selection. As such, it hopes to contribute to the species conservation, providing subsidy to future management strategies. The phylogenetic analyses have already been made and we are currently concluding a manuscript for submission, while the data related to habitat use and selection have already been collected and are under analysis.
