Problems about permanence in distance education: can Chatbots contribute to improve student engagement in higher education?

The evasion is a huge problem of distance education. The number of students who dropout is large and this is related to the lack of interaction, engagement and motivation to reach the end of the course. This study aims to investigate the issue of dropout in higher education, which is embedded in a context of growth and commodification of education. The study will analyze the interests pursued by educational institutions in contrast with the traditional function of higher education and the purpose of learning. Some institutions use chatbots to improve student engagement and control dropout. Therefore, this research will investigate the websites of three companies that offer the service of developing chatbots for higher education institutions. Through discourse analysis, it will be interpreted what problems these companies want to solve, how they do it and what are the greatest interests pursued. Finally, it will be possible to verify the potential of this tool to really contribute to improve student engagement in digital education, improve learning, and contribute to reducing dropout.
