distance educacion, higher education, school dropouts, chatbots
School dropout is a significant problem in distance education. The number of students who give up midway through the course is substantial, and this is also related to the lack of interaction, engagement, and motivation to complete the course. This research aimed to study the issue of school dropout in higher education in order to understand the context of growth and commodification of education in which the problem is embedded, analyzing the interests pursued by educational institutions in contrast to the traditional role of higher education and the purpose of learning. Based on this, we analyzed the proposals of companies developing chatbots for higher education through the content analysis of articles published on the blogs of these companies. We found that these companies propose that the use of chatbots mainly integrates the development of administrative activities of institutions with the goal of improving communication with students and serving them more quickly. When it comes to pedagogical activities, the use of chatbots is primarily employed for performing prescribed tasks, following an intuitionist logic. The developing companies believe that chatbots can contribute to student satisfaction and engagement; however, the proposal is oriented towards a customer service logic rather than learning and academic development.
