SUMMARY:

A study on the representativeness and social invisibility of missing persons and their families in news coverage in Brazil, utilizing a systematic literature review and content analysis methodology. Despite being a significant social issue, with an annual average of 60,000 reported missing persons, this problem receives limited attention in the media and is often presented in a superficial and factual manner. This study will conduct a survey, analysis, and categorization of how the disappearance of persons was portrayed in the journalistic production of four prominent Brazilian media outlets during the 2010s, aiming to identify patterns and trends. Through this analysis, the objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the space allocated to disappearance in the public sphere and establish strategies to enhance visibility of the issue. The ultimate goal is to contribute with public authorities, collectives of relatives of missing persons, organizations, and other stakeholders in recognizing the problem and developing effective tools for disseminating information and mobilizing society."
