SUMMARY:

Introduction: We live immersed in a predominantly digital context. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in 2019, about 4.1 billion people were connected to the Internet. The rapid growth in the use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has profoundly transformed our routines over the last five decades. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted this dependency, as we saw a surge of activities, both in the public and private sectors, moving to digital environments. In this scenario of intense digitalization, all segments, from governmental entities to small enterprises, faced the challenge and opportunity to recompense processes and communication channels. The present work seeks to answer the following questions: What do we know about digital literacy and social isolation of elderly people? And what are the opportunities and barriers that these seniors encounter in using digital technologies to enrich their social interactions? Objective: To understand the influence of digital literacy on the social interaction capacity of elderly people aged 80 years or older in the digital age. Method: This is a mixed-approach, cross-sectional, and analytical study. The methodological procedures are organized in three stages: i) Bibliographic research of scope review type of the literature. ii) A descriptive analysis and binary regression to understand the profile of the elderly participants from Sesc/DF aged 80 years or older with data collected by the Research Group "Aging Citizen." iii) Qualitative research involving content analysis of responses to open-ended questions. With ICTs, elderly people can benefit in previously unimaginable ways. The ability to establish global connections, without the need for displacement, represents not just a social expansion, but also a cognitive one. The multiplicity of educational, recreational, and entertainment resources at the touch of a finger reinforces the idea that aging does not mean isolating oneself or staying on the sidelines of innovations. The customization of environments and services, adjusting to the specific needs of the elderly, highlights a new model of aging: healthy, integrated, and, above all, empowered by technology. Thus, it becomes evident that the digital age is not an exclusive territory of the young. The elderly population, particularly those aged 80 or more, have a significant space in this technological universe. Digital literacy, more than an adaptation skill, is an open door to an enhanced quality of life, enriched social interaction, and a dignified and connected aging journey in the contemporary world.
