SUMMARY:

In recent decades, it has been possible to notice significant changes in Brazil's population, especially in relation to its age structure, which is experiencing a significant increase in the number of centenarians. This scenario has motivated studies that seek to discover the limits of human life, since understanding longevity is crucial due to the broad implications it has on government programs, economic policy and individual planning. The assessment of these implications depends on accurate information about the longevity of the population, something that has not yet been completely carried out in Brazil, especially regarding the real size of this population group. This work sought to understand how much progress has been made in terms of the quality of age declaration in the group of centenarian elderly people and subgroups, considering that the problem related to this data is already known in several locations around the world and the composition is also little explored regarding sociodemographic characteristics of this group. The document presents the research question, general objective and specific objectives, theoretical framework and as preliminary results, the application to a group of centenarians aged 100 and over from the Federal District for the years 1980, 1991, 2000 and 2010 for comparisons with the quantitative figures presented in the Censuses of those years. The objectives proposed for the Qualification stage were achieved and will be evolved based on the evaluation by the examining board and expansion of the method to other Federative Units.
