The present study consists of an analysis of the derivation of expletive subjects and multiple copies within Generative Theory. In the 1990s, the Theory of Movement as Copy was introduced, followed later by the Theory of Control as Movement. Within these frameworks, certain cases of exclusive coreference were interpreted as being derived by movement. For example, Jairo Nunes proposes that, in the derivation of “João viu ele mesmo” (“João saw himself”), ele is a copy of João, derived by movement. In this dissertation, it is proposed that the same machinery can be extended to cases of expletive subjects of the there-type. Chomsky (1995) assumes that, in such cases, the expletive maintains a relationship with a nominal known as the “expletive–associate relation.” This research shows that there is parallelism between the expletive–associate relation and anaphors within Binding Theory. Accordingly, it is argued that the derivation of expletives does not, in fact, require a “special relation” with nominals in the sentence; just as in the case of “ele mesmo”, these expletives are derived by movement.

This dissertation, employing a qualitative approach, falls within the field of systemicfunctional linguistic studies and aims to investigate news texts from a collection of Portuguese language textbooks for the final years of elementary school, approved by the National Textbook and Didactic Material Plan (PNLD) of 2020 and adopted by the Municipal Secretariat of Palmas, capital of the state of Tocantins, for use in schools in the network. In general, it seeks to investigate the functional and sociosemiotic structuring of news texts, examining the relationship between verbal and visual language, both from their materialization in textbooks and in the media sources of circulation – the digital environment. The motivation for conducting this research stemmed from the understanding that it is necessary to study multimodal school texts present in textbooks and in the digital environment. The assumptions of Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014), the Sydney School of Genre Theory (MARTIN; ROSE, 2007), the Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2006), the Intermodal Ideational System (UNSWORTH, 2006), and the layout system of Systemic-Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (PAINTER; MARTIN; UNSWORTH, 2013) construct the theoretical and methodological framework of this dissertation. The research results indicate the existence of significant modifications in news articles when transposed from circulation media to textbooks, especially regarding the use and function of images and the organization of verbal information. In this sense, this study indicates the relevance of proposals for teaching multimodal texts that consider not only texts from textbooks.

The objective of this dissertation is to further investigate the subdivision of names in Guajá (subgroup VIII of the Tupi-Guarani family, according to Rodrigues (2011)) into divalent and monovalent names, according to the number of arguments they admit (Magalhães and Mattos 2014). The data used to describe and classify names in the Guajá language are from Magalhães (2007, 2014), in addition to unpublished data from field research (recordings, phonetic transcription, and audio and/or video interviews). The methodology used is bibliographic and documentary research with a literature review, of a descriptive nature and qualitative approach. The hypothesis defended in this work is that, in the Guajá language, nouns, like verbs, have the capacity to predicate and express their relationship with their arguments through valence mechanisms, this mechanism being determinant for the subdivision of the class. Initial analyses show that both divalent (or relational) and monovalent (absolute) nouns occur as the head of a Noun Phrase (NP) and present an external argument when functioning as an equative predicate. What differentiates the subclasses is the fact that divalent nouns are characterized by requiring, in addition to the external argument, an internal argument indexed to the noun by means of a series of person markers (transcategorical) or a noun related to the head by a linker prefix. Monovalents are characterized by not admitting internal arguments. In this work, inspired by Queixalós's (2005, 2016) interpretation of nominal valence in Katukina and other Amazonian languages, we hope to describe and explain the nominal subclasses of Guajá based on the concept of nominal valence as proposed by Kinkade (1982), Ágel and Fischer (2012), and Vapnarsky (2013), proposing a more homogeneous theoretical approach to the description of the language from a morphosyntactic perspective of the behavior of word classes. In addition to semantic revision and classification from a syntactic perspective, we analyzed the Guajá data using the typological-functional concepts of iconicity and frequency of use (Haiman, 1983 and Haspelmath, 2017), with the aim of verifying whether the nominal subclasses into monovalent and divalent nouns are fixed or whether the context of use can influence changes in this subclassification, since such concepts help to reflect on the motivation that the world's languages have to encode, in their grammar, different structures for alienable and inalienable nouns.

This paper presents a terminological study of Unidades Fraseológicas Especializadas (UFEs) related to the term “visa” in Brazilian migration legislation, with the aim of supporting the work of professionals who operate in contexts of migratory processes and rely on specialized language. The focus is on UFEs formed by the combination of the verbs “solicitar,” “conceder,” and “emitir” with the term “visa” and its variants ("visto temporário", "visto diplomático", "visto oficial", "visto de cortesia", "visto de visita”), which represent the central stages of the migratory documentation process: initiation by the applicant, administrative decision, and materialization of the document. The Lexic.Legs.Imigração-UnB-BR corpus, developed within the project Mapeamento terminológico sobre o fluxo imigratório no Brasil – redução da desigualdade por meio das leis e diretrizes, coordinated by Maia-Pires, was used for this study and comprises 121 documents from governmental websites and non-governmental organizations addressing legislation and guidelines related to international migration processes in Brazil. As a result, terminological phraseologies were identified and described to contribute to the reference document currently under development by the LexiC research group. The execution of this research required studies in Terminologia and Terminografia, based on the methods proposed by Finatto and Krieger (2004), Bevilacqua (2004, 2024), and Maia-Pires (2024). Furthermore, the 14 UFEs identified were described and recorded in computerized terminological records on the LexiC Platform, developed by the research group, in which information on contexts of use, sources, structural variants, and the thematic roles of participants was systematized. In addition, domain trees were developed to represent the conceptual relationships among the UFEs and the procedural cycle of visas. As a result, 14 Specialized Phraseological Units were identified and described, whose systematization led to the elaboration of entries intended to compose the Terminological Glossary on Brazilian Migration Legislation, as conceived by Maia-Pires (2024), contributing to the phraseological documentation of this domain and to access to information for professionals and international migrants.

The aim of this dissertation is to present a current analysis, grounded in new aerodynamic data and methods, of the phenomenon of Nasal Harmony in the Guajá language, spoken by the Awa people in the state of Maranhão and belonging to Subgroup V of the Tupi-Guarani family, Tupi Stock (Rodrigues, 1986; Dietrich, 2010). Building on previous phonetic-phonological descriptions by Cunha (1987) and Nascimento (2008), we investigate the status of nasalization with respect to the process of nasal airflow spreading and the role played by each group of segments in this process (stressed nasal vowels, unstressed vowels, obstruents and the affricate, and glides and laryngeals). The data underlying the present analytical proposal were collected using equipment specifically developed for this type of analysis, namely the EGG-D800, whose main advantage lies in its ability to distinguish, during data collection, between oral and nasal airflow, as well as its suitability for modern acoustic and aerodynamic analysis via Praat. After segmentation, a total of six speakers (three men and three women) from different villages and clans were selected in order to obtain a sample as representative as possible of the language. Using Praat Picture, a native auxiliary tool of Praat, we constructed visual representations that show in detail the behavior of oral and nasal airflow within the word domain. With regard to the interpretation of the phenomenon, studies such as Cohn (1990), Walker (1998; 2011), Escobar (2017), and Miranda and Picanço (2020) provide the analytical framework and account for the different configurations that Nasal Harmony may exhibit. On this basis, we arrive at some general results for Guajá, such as the following: starting from the trigger, which is always the vowel of the stressed syllable located to the right of the word, the remaining vowels function as targets of nasalization, as do the palatal glide /j/ and the labial glide /w/, which show a greater attraction to nasalization than unstressed vowels. The glottal /h/ displays a distinct behavior in the language, being a target of Nasal Harmony and also potentially serving as a peak of spread nasalization. In oral contexts, this segment exhibits intrinsic nasalization, concentrating peaks in both oral and nasal airflow simultaneously. The /h/ also shows nasalization when it occurs word-initially, these latter two cases being interpreted as rhinoglottophilia. The tap /ɾ/ is also a target of nasalization, oscillating between remaining unchanged in longer words, in which the segment is therefore distant from the trigger, becoming weakly or strongly nasalized [ɾ̃, ɾ̰], or being realized as a fully nasal segment [n] in harmonic contexts. The obstruents /p/, /t/, /tʃ/, /k/, /kʷ/, and /ʔ/, in turn, act as blockers of Nasal Harmony only when they occur in sequence, producing a cumulative effect. When isolated, however, they function as transparent or semi-transparent segments in syllabic or lexical contexts. The same behavior was attested for the glottal stop /ʔ/. We further posit [ɲ] as an allophone of /j/ in nasal contexts. Finally, we observe that vowels and glides in word-initial position exhibit punctual nasalization, in accordance with the hypothesis proposed by Rodrigues (2003). Finally, Guajá Nasal Harmony exhibits a gradient pattern, demonstrating that there is a gradual lowering of the soft palate.

This study aims to investigate, from the perspective of Generative Grammar, how the notion of unaccusativity can be used to improve the teaching of grammar. In Traditional Grammar, intransitive verbs are treated as a homogeneous category. Linguistic studies, however, show that verbs traditionally classified as intransitive, due to their behavior in the sentences in which they occur, require a differentiated treatment and are therefore subdivided into unergative (or prototypical intransitive) and unaccusative verbs. Unergative verbs are monoargumental predicates that select only an external argument, that is, typically a subject. Unaccusative verbs, in turn, are monoargumental predicates that select only an internal argument, which surfaces in subject position as a result of displacement. The purpose of this research is to investigate how unaccusativity can be addressed in grammar teaching and to propose a new methodological approach to the teaching of syntactic analysis in the classroom. It thus constitutes an attempt at methodological renewal of pedagogical praxis, with the intention of changing not only the content to be taught in the classroom, but also the manner and the goals with which this content is approached. It is therefore necessary to ask whether current normative teaching practices actually yield satisfactory results and whether a more reflective approach would not be far more successful, insofar as it would allow students to engage in a more careful reflection on linguistic facts, working, among other aspects, with what Medeiros Junior (2020) terms logical-linguistic reasoning. Addressing such issues is essential in order to improve basic education in Brazil, by transforming not only the curricular content but also the broader conception of how grammar should be taught to students. Our initial hypothesis is that, by broadening the scope of grammar teaching beyond a narrowly unreflective treatment of verbal transitivity, it will be possible to achieve more meaningful learning outcomes in Portuguese language education at the basic level.

The primary objective of this research is to critically evaluate the treatment of the passive voice in major textbooks used in the context of teaching Portuguese as an Additional Language (PLA). To this end, it employs a qualitative approach to data generation and analysis, emphasizing an in-depth interpretation of linguistic phenomena. The study identifies concepts, types, and functions of the passive voice and establishes a contrastive synthesis between (i) descriptions and explanations from functional-typological linguistics, (ii) analyses proposed by Brazilian Portuguese linguists, and (iii) the manner in which the selected textbooks address this content. The analysis also considers parameters established by official reference documents for language teaching and assessment from the Camões Institute, the Guimarães Rosa Institute, and Celpe-Bras, as well as discussions regarding teaching approaches. Results indicate that, although the teaching materials demonstrate a concern for communication, the treatment of the passive voice remains largely restricted to the identification and transformation of syntactic structures, relegating to the background fundamental semantic, pragmatic, and discursive aspects required for the functional use of this resource in real interactional contexts.

This dissertation investigates the relationship between linguistic theory, teaching, and educational assessment through the analysis of items from the Languages section of the Brazilian National High School Examination (Enem). Although the exam is often associated with the assessment of interpretive abilities in communicative contexts, this study is based on the hypothesis that the resolution of certain questions mobilizes structural linguistic knowledge previously internalized by speakers and later developed through formal education. In this sense, the study seeks to investigate the extent to which the resolution of specific exam items mobilizes linguistic knowledge previously internalized by speakers—understood, considering Generative Theory, as part of linguistic competence—or knowledge associated with the formal teaching of language, linked to what authors such as Kato refer to as literate grammar. The study draws on contributions from generative theory, particularly the notion of Competence proposed by Chomsky, as well as on reflections concerning grammar teaching and metalinguistic awareness found in the works of Lobato, Kato, Guerra-Vicente, and Pilati, among other authors. Methodologically, a qualitative analysis of selected items from the Languages section of the Enem is conducted, considering the skills described in the exam’s Reference Matrix and the linguistic knowledge mobilized in their resolution. The results indicate that the adequate interpretation of certain questions depends on the activation of structural principles of language, such as anaphoric relations, syntactic organization, and mechanisms of textual cohesion. The interpretation of these phenomena may mobilize both linguistic knowledge previously internalized by speakers—understood, within the generative tradition, as part of linguistic competence and, in some cases, related to universal principles of language—and knowledge explicitly taught in the school context. Thus, the study argues that the Languages section of the Enem is not limited to contextual text interpretation but presupposes, at various moments, the mastery of linguistic knowledge that can be described considering linguistic theory. By highlighting this relationship, the study contributes to the debate on the role of linguistic theory in the education of first-language teachers and to a better understanding of the knowledge effectively mobilized in large-scale educational assessments.

Disinformation and the phenomenon of fake news are prominent topics in the contemporary Brazilian context, especially since the 2018 presidential election campaign and the covid-19 pandemic. The accelerated spread of biased and false information poses a challenge to society as it has contributed to polarization, institutional discredit, and the incitement of violence in the digital environment. This context coincides with the emergence of post-truth and tribal epistemology, which represent the predominance of individual beliefs over factual truth. In this context, this research, adopting a qualitative approach and grounded in Text Linguistics (TL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), aims to analyze the construction of referential tessituras in fake news that incite violence, with a view to understanding how the use of these strategies contributes to meaning-making, considering the dynamics of the circulation of such information on social media and news websites. The study is relevant because it sheds light on the linguistic-discursive strategies of fake news designed to produce meanings and generate adherence from interlocutors. The linguistic-discursive analysis of fake news that promotes violence is anchored in the identification of the discourse person, the use of ideological mechanisms, and the social and discursive practices that permeate these messages. Applying Document Analysis, we select fake news on "covid kit" and "early treatment"; vaccine denialism; attacks on the press; "gay kit" and "penis bottle". To examine how the referential textures of these fake news appropriate persuasive strategies to generate adherence, we proposed the following analytical categories: referentiation strategies, marks of subjectivity, documentary aspects, three-dimensional model, and typology of fake news. The results show that processes of categorization, recategorization, omissions, and generalizations are strategically mobilized in the production of fake news to construct meanings. We concluded that understanding these mechanisms is crucial for the development of effective strategies to combat disinformation.

This research is based on (auto)ethnographic experiences (Alhayek et al., 2023; Moreira, 2023; Raimondi, 2020) and it seeks to conduct discursive, critical, and situated analyses grounded in the dialectic between the writing/authorship and the (auto)ethnographic reports of queer students at the University of Brasília (UnB), with a view to fostering discursive and reflective displacements. The theoretical foundations of the study are: (i) Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) (Chouliaraki; Fairclough, 1999; Dias, 2015, 2011; Fairclough, 2003, 2016; Queiroz, 2020; Resende & Ramalho, 2006, 2011; Magalhães, 2017; Thompson, 2011); (ii) gender and sexuality studies (Butler, 2003, 2019; Foucault, 1999a; Louro, 1997, 2004; Preciado, 2014) in articulation with Queer Linguistics (Borba, 2019, 2020; Melo, 2007, 2017, 2019; Moita Lopes, 2022); and (iii) assumptions of critical and creative authorship (Dias, 2021; Dias, Coroa, Lima, 2018; Albuquerque, 2020) in connection with discussions on critical education aimed at fostering communities of learning and change (Freire, 1996, 2005; hooks, 2000; Ribeiro & Dias, 2021). The study is qualitative in nature (Bauer & Gaskell, 2011; Creswell, 2010; Flick, 2009; Minayo, 2013) and it adopts a critical (auto)ethnographic approach (Cameron, 1992; Van Maanen, 1988; Thomas, 1993). The initial stage of discursive data generation took place in a text production class within the undergraduate Letters program at UnB, with the aim of identifying a focus group (composed of queer students) to participate in extension workshops conducted from a multi-methodological perspective. These included writing activities, field notes, (auto)ethnographic reports (collected through semi-structured interviews and an online questionnaire), and workshop artifacts (authorial texts produced by queer students).

This study aims to verify, based on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the representations of women in the classroom, considering stereotypes of race, gender, and age. This allows for the recognition of female identity and representation and illuminates the interest of older women in occupying formal educational environments. To this end, this analysis takes place at the Centro Interescolar de Línguas do Paranoá (CIL). Looking at the subjectivity of these women means recognizing their identities, seeking to acknowledge the prejudices that structure their worldviews and force them to carry in their memories the stereotype of the older woman, housewife, and mother. The personification of this figure in the imagination of these women is displaced in the classroom environment, which can generate a feeling of non-belonging. Thus, the curiosity arises to understand why the vision of the subservient woman, relegated to domestic functions, still prevails, and why she is assigned a place laden with stereotypes. According to Bourdieu and Passeron (1975), the school reproduces this dominant culture and, instead of reducing social inequalities, it exacerbates them. Analyzing the social construct of these women, we consider that they belong to typically patriarchal family structures, in which the woman is still the "housewife" and, even if they work outside the home or attend school, are responsible for domestic chores. Growing up in these environments, they reverberate both the discourses and behaviors with which they live, often behaving uncritically in the face of these phenomena. In this context, curiosity grew to investigate how the discourse to which these women are exposed interferes with the recognition of their identity(ies) and how critical literacy can break this/these pattern(s) of recognition. Discourse produces language and is related to history and the social constructions of individuals. Fairclough (2001) argues that society establishes discourses based on class, gender, and race relations, but also through institutions such as schools, and dialectically, discourse also shapes society. Discourses are intertwined with the social practices of individuals; this view aligns with Van Dijk (2009), who states that discourse is analyzed as an interaction situated in a context. Thus, conceptions related to race, class, gender, or age imply the construction of subjects and, consequently, the constitution of their identities. In this way, the intention is to explore discursive representations, in an ethnographic research, as a form of epistemological construction that can result in the recognition of these identities. Transforming the reality with which these women are familiar into future pedagogical strategies motivates this analytical proposal, in order to deconstruct discursive schemes that result in a superficial view of the role of black women in society.

This work is affiliated with the Graduate Program in Linguistics at the University of Brasília (PPGL/UnB) and to the Critical Education and Creative Authorship Research Group (GECRIA - UnB/CNPq). This project is part of the larger project entitled “Creative authorship, education and linguistic awareness: critical discourse studies”, under the coordination of Professor Dr. Juliana de Freitas Dias, from the University of Brasília (UnB), as advisor of this research and accredited researcher in the Graduate Program in Linguistics. This research in development focuses on reading and writing practices at school through the construction of Writing Communities (Dias, 2021), involving the linguistic development of children and adolescents, their perceptions about authorship, the discourses and reflections towards the world that surrounds them as authors of their own narratives, also taking into consideration the importance of reading and writing at school, starting from reflections on a critical education of the Portuguese language and experiencing creative authorship writing workshops (Dias; Coroa; Lima, 2018; Dias, 2020, 2021). To outline the present research, it was necessary to establish a theoretical-practical dialogue among the following points: education (hooks, 2023; Freire, 2019; Arroyo, 2013; Freire and Faundez, 2021; Albuquerque, 2020), creative practices in education (Dias, 2021; Rodari, 1982; Koch, 2008; Sotriano, 2003), and language as interaction (Fairclough and Chouliaraki, 1999; Magalhães, Martins and Redesende, 2024; Fairclough, 1989; Simas and Rufino, 2020; Martins, 2011; Fairclough, 2016; Queiroz, 2020). This is a qualitative research (Denzin and Lincoln, 2006; Gil, 2008) and of a critical-ethnographic nature (Denzin and Lincoln, 2006; Thomas, 1993), carried out in a public school in Taguatinga with twenty students during five months. I identified the relevance of the present research as a way of experiencing pedagogical proposals that seek to break with the rigidness of traditional reading and writing practices capable of creating stigmas and blocking creativity, as well as due to the critical potential, in order to broaden possibilities of new ways of acting, thinking and modifying the educational reality by teachers in initial and/or continuing education.

This dissertation investigates the discourse of children's entertainment videos broadcast on YouTube, focusing on their narrative construction, based on theoretical and methodological contributions from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Social Semiotics (SS). Considering that the YouTube interface actively participates in shaping the discourses produced on it, the socio-discursive problem of content mediation by digital platforms is considered the object of analysis for the work presented here; for this reason, an analytical perspective centered on the concept of affordance is adopted (Coletiva Ciborga, 2020; Ghazvineh, 2025). The corpus of analysis consists of videos from channels aimed at children and with high visibility on Brazilian YouTube, investigated under five categories: a) compositional elements (Kress; van Leeuwen 1996, 2001; Vieira; Resende, 2016); b) generic structures (Fairclough, 2003a; Vieira; Resende, 2016); c) intertextuality (Fairclough, 2003a; Vieira; Resende, 2016); d) interdiscursivity (Vieira; Resende, 2016) and e) ethos (Maingueneau 2010; 2016; 2020). The overall objective of the analyses was to investigate the recurrences and variations in narrative strategy based on its multimodal expression in the videos and their respective digital pages. The results suggest different levels of implication between the identity constructed by the content producer and the semiotic regime of the platform and, furthermore, suggest the occurrence of native digital narrative forms, corroborating the relevance of affordances in digital discourse.

This dissertation investigates women's relationship with writing as a space for authorship and the affirmation of existence. Conducted within the Graduate Program in Linguistics at the University of Brasília (PPGL/UnB) and the Critical Education and Creative Authorship Research Group (GECRIA/UnB/CNPq), the study aims to understand how women who write in the Federal District construct meanings regarding writing, authorship, and writer identity, and how these experiences are shaped by power relations regulated through the orders of discourse surrounding writing within the modern-colonial world-system. Drawing on Critical Discourse Studies (Fairclough, 2001; Wodak, 2004; Van Dijk, 2012) and the decolonial perspective (Walsh, 2009; Quijano, 2005; Bispo dos Santos, 2023), I propose the concept of the coloniality of writing to designate the historical and discursive processes that have produced hierarchies among subjects, forms of knowledge, and modes of language, particularly affecting women’s relationship with writing. The epistemologies of writing, authorship, and self-writing (Cixous, 2022; Lorde, 2019; Anzaldúa, 2000; Rago, 2013; Dias, 2023) make it possible to understand writing as a territory of meaning-making in which women elaborate experiences, construct authorship, and affirm their existence. The study adopts a qualitative approach inspired by critical (auto)ethnographic-discursive research (Thomas, 1993; Magalhães, 2000), articulated through the “Dialogical Circle” (Gira dialógica), a theoretical-methodological device developed within this research to foster encounters among different discursive existences. The corpus consists of a questionnaire, a reading and writing cycle, texts produced by women writers in the Federal District, the researcher’s master’s journal, and research notes. The meanings that emerged from the dialogues reveal that women’s relationship with writing is permeated by experiences of shame, visibility, silencing, racialization, discursive marginalization, and struggles for the legitimacy of the spoken and written word. At the same time, these findings demonstrate that writing may constitute a practice of self-formation, the elaboration of experience, and the affirmation of existence. Within this context, the study proposes the concept of “Write-to-See-Yourself (“EscreVER-se”) as a process of self-constitution through language and understands creative authorship writing as a decolonial practice of existence, capable of opening pathways to authorship, strengthening writer identity, and sowing life where coloniality has produced erasures and prohibitions.

Deafblindness is a unique disability, as it involves both hearing and visual impairments at varying degrees. This condition gives rise to multiple barriers to communication, access to information, and inclusion in educational settings such as schools and universities. This research aims to propose a terminological record through an alphabetical bilingual lexicon (Brazilian Sign Language – Libras and Portuguese), designed to meet the specific needs of deafblind individuals. The dissertation is grounded in studies on terminology and deafblindness (Faulstich, Cader-Nascimento & Costa, Maia, Castro Júnior, among others). To achieve this goal, existing glossaries and dictionaries—such as those from UFSC and Capovilla—were analyzed, revealing limitations in meeting this audience’s demands. The study organizes ten lexical-sign entries from the field of Linguistics, which are especially relevant to the teaching of Libras and Portuguese. It presents an accessible terminological record structure that includes visual and tactile descriptions of Libras parameters (hand configuration, movement, articulation point, among others), as well as Portuguese equivalents and contextual usage. The results show that the standardization and systematization of sign-terms enhance linguistic accessibility, communicative autonomy, and the dissemination of knowledge among deafblind people, while also indicating the need for further studies and technological improvements using multimodal resources. The main contribution of this research is to provide a methodological prototype of a bilingual terminological record, with potential pedagogical applications in both school and academic environments.

In this dissertation, I investigate how authorship is constructed and recognized in the context of the essay component of Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio – Enem, considering the relationships among educational guidelines for the teaching of writing, the examination’s institutional criteria, and texts awarded the maximum score. The Enem essay holds a central position in Brazilian education, as it assesses candidates’ performance and influences pedagogical practices, teaching materials, and approaches to teaching and learning text production. The relevance of this study therefore derives from the examination’s broad educational reach, since its criteria extend beyond the examination itself and contribute to defining the forms of writing recognized as legitimate within the school context. I assume that authorship, although mentioned in Enem documents, is not systematically conceptualized by the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep), but is instead recognized through indicators related to the organization of the textual project, argumentative articulation, the mobilization of repertoires, and candidates’ linguistic and textual choices. The study is situated within the field of Text Linguistics and understands text as a social, interactional, and discursively situated practice. The theoretical framework draws on studies of text developed by Koch (2004, 2011, 2015), Marcuschi (2006, 2008), Antunes (2009), and Cavalcante et al. (2019); discussions of authorship proposed by Bakhtin (1992), Foucault (1979), Geraldi (2013), Vidon (2016, 2017), and Albuquerque (2022); and, complementarily, the Critical Discourse Analysis developed by Chouliaraki and Fairclough (1999) and Fairclough (2001, 2003). Methodologically, I conduct qualitative documentary research, employing documentary analysis procedures and categories related to textuality. The corpus comprises the BNCC, understood as an instance of educational prescription; the 2024 and 2025 Enem Participant Guides, selected for a comparative examination of continuities and shifts in the assessment construct; and four maximum-scoring essays, two written in the 2023 Enem and two in the 2024 Enem, selected because they represent institutionally legitimized forms of writing. The analyses indicate that the BNCC projects a broad conception of authorship associated with autonomy, social participation, information curation, and critical engagement, whereas the Participant Guides translate this horizon into increasingly operationalizable criteria. In 2025, the requirements concerning the argumentative functionality of repertoires, precise adherence to the essay prompt, diversification of the resources responsible for constructing coherence, and the verifiable organization of the proposed intervention became more explicit. In the essays, I identify a relatively stabilized macrostructure, characterized by the use of the third person, the presence of argumentative operators at the beginning of paragraphs, and the recurrent organization of the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Authorship, however, emerges through the ways in which this structure is developed, particularly through the selection and reworking of repertoires, referential, intertextual, syntactic, and lexical choices, and the evaluative function performed by adjectives and adverbs. I therefore understand that Enem recognizes authorship as the ability to select, organize, relate, and rework discourses, although it limits its realization by requiring singularity to remain legible within previously established thematic, formal, and evaluative parameters. This research contributes to discussions on Text Linguistics, authorship, assessment, and the teaching of text production by demonstrating that the examination’s criteria participate in shaping models of writing that permeate schools and contemporary language education practices.

This study investigates the role of intertextuality in the construction, legitimation, contestation, and struggles over meaning surrounding the disinformation narrative claiming that the opening of dam gates contributed to the worsening of the 2023 floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The research is grounded in Text Linguistics, in dialogue with Critical Discourse Analysis, and draws on contributions from Communication Studies. This theoretical articulation makes it possible to understand disinformation as a phenomenon that is simultaneously textual, discursive, and communicational. From this perspective, intertextuality is conceived as a constitutive principle of textuality, inseparable from the sociocognitive and socio-interactional processes that guide the production, interpretation, and circulation of meaning. Accordingly, the analysis combines the assumptions of Text Linguistics with Teun A. van Dijk’s contributions on sociocognitive models in order to examine how shared knowledge, inferences, contextual representations, and discursive memory participate in the construction of narratives. This framework is complemented by contributions from Communication Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis, which enable the examination of circulation dynamics, legitimation processes, and struggles over meaning in digital environments. Methodologically, this qualitative study is based on the analysis of a corpus consisting of eight texts published on digital platforms and selected for their participation in the controversy surrounding the narrative of the alleged opening of dam gates. Produced by different social actors and belonging to distinct discourse genres, these texts constitute an intertextual network in which interpretations of the causes of the floods are constructed, circulated, legitimized, and contested. The findings indicate that intertextuality plays a significant role in the constitution of this network of discourses, contributing to the construction and transformation of circulating meanings through processes of textual retrieval, recontextualization, and resignification of previous discourses. The analysis further demonstrates that the persistence of these narratives results from the articulation of textual mechanisms, sociocognitive elements, and communicational dynamics, revealing disputes over legitimacy, interpretive authority, and the definition of meanings attributed to the events. As a theoretical contribution, the study demonstrates the analytical potential of the dialogue between Text Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Communication Studies for understanding disinformation as a phenomenon that is simultaneously textual, sociocognitive, discursive, and communicational.

This dissertation is set in the field of Sign Language Linguistics and aims, in general, to describe and analyze manner adverbs in Brazilian Sign Language – Libras, investigating the linguistic strategies used to express this grammatical category. The research is based on the observation that the expression of manner – unlike what happens in spoken languages like Portuguese, which predominantly use suffixes like “-mente” – occurs through specific visuo-spatial means (QUADROS, 2023), such as modifications in the movement of signs, the use of non-manual expressions (facial and body), adjustments in speed and intensity, as well as classifiers (XAVIER, 2017; GRITZENKO, 2019). With a qualitative approach, the research adopts videography as the central methodological procedure, analyzing videos available in the digital environment, in which deaf adult Libras signers produce spontaneous utterances. The data is organized based on contrasts with equivalent structures in Portuguese, aiming to identify, classify, and describe the adverbs of manner in Libras, as well as to check whether their formation occurs through simple signs or complex structures. The results point to the predominance of strategies integrated into verb morphology or non-manual markers, showing that Libras systematically encodes the expression of manner, though not isomorphically compared to spoken languages. The research aims to contribute both to the theoretical advancement of descriptive studies of Libras and to practical applications in language teaching, interpreter training, and the development of linguistically grounded teaching materials, reaffirming the legitimacy and grammatical complexity of Libras as the natural language of the Brazilian Deaf community.

This dissertation’s primary objective is to analyze the alternation between the first-person plural pronouns nós and a gente in Brasília speech. The research’s theoretical framework is Variationist Theory (or Variation Theory), by Labov (2006 [1972]), and the Theory of Language Change, by Weinreich, Labov, and Herzog (2006 [1968]), which advocate a quantitative analysis of linguistic phenomena. The general hypothesis is that the more innovative pronoun – namely, a gente — will predominate over nós. To investigate this phenomenon, a corpus of 22 interviews was taken, conducted by Andrade (2008 to 2012) and kindly provided to VALCO – the Central-West Linguistic Variation Project, in the administrative regions of Vila Planalto and Sobradinho. After collecting 829 tokens, a quantitative analysis was carried out using the statistical tool Goldvarb-X (SANKOFF, 1988; SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE & SMITH, 2005). Five independent social variables were coded and analyzed: sex, age group, level of education, colaborator’s identification (used only for the researcher’s control), and the collaborators’ administrative region of origin; and six independent linguistic variables: syntactic function, linguistic parallelism, subject expression, reference type, verbal tense and phonetic salience, and verbal agreement (also only for control, so it was excluded for relative weight). Two rounds have been held: the first one according to subject x other syntactic structures, and the second one only according to subjetc. In both rounds, the variable verbal tense and phonetic salience was eliminated. In the first round, the social variables that favored a gente were women, above 20 years old and children from 5 to 9 years old. Whereas the linguistics variable that favored the innovative variant were subject, not first in the series preceded by a gente, explicit filling and MODELO generic reference. In the second round, the variables that favored a gente in subject position were women, above 20 years old and children from 5 to 9 years old, not first in the series preceded by a gente, explicit filling and generic reference.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent impairments in communication and language that may significantly affect communicative competence and social participation. In this context, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) has been widely adopted to expand communication opportunities for individuals with complex communication needs. However, evidence regarding the language skills promoted by multimodal AAC-based interventions remains limited. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to identify the language skills that show the greatest gains in children and adolescents with ASD following multimodal AAC interventions. A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches were performed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, including studies published between 2009 and 2024. After applying the eligibility criteria, nine studies were included in the final review. The findings demonstrated that the interventions primarily focused on the development of functional communication, with outcomes related to increased communicative behaviors, acquisition of communicative functions, and greater participation in social interactions. In contrast, fewer studies directly assessed linguistic competence, particularly domains associated with language development and organization. It is concluded that, although multimodal AAC approaches promote important improvements in functional communication, evidence regarding their specific effects on linguistic competence remains limited. These findings highlight the need for future studies adopting broader linguistic outcome measures to better evaluate the effects of AAC interventions on language development.

This research, linked to the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics at the University of Brasília, as well as to the Critical Education and Creative Authorship Research Group - GECRIA (UnB/CNPq), aims to investigate, in light of Critical Discourse Studies, the potential of creative authorship writing as a way to promote (micro)resistance and (re)existence of women's authorship in the world of work. The epistemologies of Critical Discourse Studies, articulated with Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (ADPF (Lazar, 2005, 2007), in transdisciplinary dialogue with the Psychodynamics of Women's Work (Antloga et al., 2021) and with research on Creative Authorship Writing developed at GECRIA (DIAS; COROA; LIMA 2018; DIAS et al. 2021) underpin this research. The data were generated within a writing community of women working at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The research adopts a qualitative, critical-discursive ethnographic approach, conducted using a methodology developed in the ethnographic fields of GECRIA, which is anchored in the three gestures of creative authorship: impulse, intuition, and pulsation. The study proposes, and the analytical dialogues confirm, that creative authorship is a social practice of transgressive resistance to the oppressions of gender ideological structures and hegemonic discourses that affect the female labor market, generating silences and fears; and that creative authorship is the (re)existing identity repositioning of women that instigates authorial ways of thinking, feeling, and acting in work and social life.

This dissertation investigates, in light of the Social Theory of Discourse and Critical Discourse Analysis, the ways in which motherhood in higher education is discursively constructed, regulated, and contested in Brazilian institutional documents, taking the Maternal and Parental Policy of the University of Brasília as its central corpus. The study articulates three analytical layers: the norm, understood as the set of resolutions, laws, ordinances, and policies that name, manage, or silence motherhood; the situated experience of the researcher-mother, mobilized through the researcher-mother diary as a device for critical reflexivity; and the political-discursive contestation produced by collectives of mothers in higher education, especially the Mothers’ Collective of UnB. Methodologically, the research combines documentary analysis, a lexicalcomparative survey, and critical interpretation of representational meaning, examining how different universities produce distinct institutional images of the mother: as a subject of assistance, productivity, enrollment, persistence, or broad maternal-parental policy. The analysis of the Atlas of Maternal Persistence in Brazilian Federal Higher Education broadens the discussion to a national context marked by recent advances, regional inequalities, limited extension of policies to postgraduate education, and insufficient care infrastructure. The comparison between UnB and UFOPA deepens the tension between recognition and administrability, showing that the institutionalization of motherhood is a political achievement, but also a field of dispute over who is named, which forms of care are recognized, and which forms of motherhood remain partially erased. It concludes that maternal persistence cannot be reduced to academic enrollment, deadlines, or benefits: it requires networks, infrastructure, data, listening, institutional co-responsibility, and a transformation of the very idea of the university.

The "invention" of the Distrito Federal occurred through the encounter of multiple subjects, from distinct social backgrounds, with different cultural practices, from the most varied parts of the country. From this framework of contact, various linguistic and social phenomena can be highlighted, both as products of the time of constitution of such a diverse space and as a legacy of an equally multiform history. In this sense, the present work is concerned with — taking into consideration such a constitutive context and contrasting the Administrative Regions of Ceilândia and the Plano Piloto — examining, from a generational perspective, three dimensions of the sociolinguistic aspectology associated with these spaces of the Distrito Federal: the identity self-perception of its speakers; their level of use of lexical and grammatical categories; and evidence of processes of linguistic variation and change that may signal the consolidation of a Brasília’s variety of Portuguese. Thus, the work is carried out within the qualitative-quantitative paradigm with a view to discussing whether it is possible to affirm the existence of a Brasília variety of the Portuguese language and what the constituent aspects of this way of speaking would be.

This study aims to investigate the alternation between the conjunction mas and the conjunctive expression só que in Brazilian Portuguese, while also considering less frequent variants that function as adversative connectives (e, aí, agora, and the asyndetic construction), specifically in the Administrative Regions of Sobradinho and Vila Planalto, located in the Federal District of Brazil. The general hypothesis is that the conjunction mas—the prototypical adversative conjunction in Brazilian Portuguese— is used more frequently than the conjunctive expression só que, which is a relatively recent innovation. The study is theoretically grounded in Labovian Variationist Sociolinguistics, particularly in the concepts of linguistic variation and language change, and methodologically relies on GoldVarb X to perform the quantitative analysis of the data. The independent variables analyzed are educational level (Preschool, Elementary School I, Elementary School II, High School, and Higher Education); age group (5–9, 10–12, 13–17, and over 18 years of age); sex (male and female); Administrative Region (Sobradinho and Vila Planalto); sentence type (declarative, negative, exclamative, interrogative, and imperative); information status (new and given information); text type (argumentative, narrative, expository, instructional, and descriptive); sentence position (sentence-initial and clause-medial); discourse marker (presence and absence); and linguistic parallelism (isolated occurrence, first in the series, non-first in the series preceded by mas, só que, aí, e, the asyndetic construction, e aí, agora, or só). The variables selected as statistically significant in the best multivariate model were educational level, Administrative Region, text type, sentence position, and linguistic parallelism. The factors with the highest relative weights were Preschool (.81), non-first occurrence in the series preceded by só que (.77), and instructional text (.73). The findings suggest an interaction between educational level and text type. Children appear to acquire the innovative variant só que at an early age; however, as schooling progresses, the frequency of this variant decreases, apparently as a consequence of exposure to specific text genres. This pattern is particularly evident in the final years of elementary education and throughout high school, where considerable emphasis is placed on argumentative and essay-based writing, favoring the use of the more conservative conjunction mas.

This study aims to understand how the imperative varies in the vernacular of the Federal District, more specifically in the regions of Sobradinho and Vila Planalto. The general hypothesis is that the imperative associated with the indicative mood (deixa, mexe, vai) is used more frequently than the imperative associated with the subjunctive mood (deixe, mexa, vá), as observed in other regions of Brazil such as the Southeast (Evangelista, 2010; Figueredo, 2025), the South (Cardoso, 2007; Cardoso, 2012), the North (Muniz, 2024), and other states in the Central-West region (Deomondes, 2023). The theoretical foundation of this study is Labovian variationist sociolinguistics, particularly the concepts of variation and change (Labov, 2008 [1972]; Weinreich, Labov, Herzog, 2006), and the Goldvarb X program (Sankoff, Tagliamonte, Smith, 2005) was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Finally, 98.8% (1,042/1,055) of the data were found in the indicative mood (TERMINA a conversa) and 1.2% (13/1,055) in the subjunctive mood (ACHE o quadrado), a fact that leads me to consider a shift toward this phenomenon in the vernacular of the Federal District. The variables selected by the Goldvarb X program were Structural Polarity and Age Group; that is, the imperative in the subjunctive form (deixe, mexa, vá) tends to appear with negative polarity and in the vernacular among speakers aged 13 and older in the regions of Sobradinho and Vila Planalto—it is not a verb form that appears during the language acquisition period.

This dissertation investigates the locative subject in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) through a proposal for linguistic investigation guided by the Scientific Grammar Approach and grounded in the assumptions of Generative Theory. The study is based on the premise that traditional teaching fails by ignoring the language faculty and the students’ internalized grammar. Therefore, it proposes a scientific grammar approach in schools, grounded in inquiry-based methodology. This perspective, inspired by Honda and O'Neil (2008), is articulated with contemporary discussions on grammar instruction in Brazil. The central phenomenon of the investigation - the locative subject constructions, in which locative expressions occupy the subject position (e.g., “Brasília tem muitos prédios bonitos”) - serves as a problem-set for students to exercise the scientific method. The research describes an exploratory classroom study conducted at Centro de Ensino Médio 2 in Gama (DF), with the objective of investigating the linguistic evidence produced by the students in relation to the locative subject hypothesis and the development of the linguistic inquiry process throughout the proposed activities. The results show that the responses produced by the students provided evidence compatible with the locative subject hypothesis and, at the same time, revealed the development, at different levels, of linguistic inquiry procedures throughout the proposed activities. The results also highlight the relevance of the organization of the activities and teacher mediation for the continuity of the inquiry process. These results may contribute to grammar teaching practices in Basic Education that recognize students’ linguistic knowledge and promote a more reflective and scientific relation with language.

Gender political violence has become a relevant agenda to understand how political polarization in Brazil takes on new contours from 2023 onwards. Federal deputies from the progressive wing have denounced gender political violence through their parliamentary work with successive threats to their mandates. In this project, we propose to investigate this problem with tools from critical discourse studies and intersectional and decolonial analytical keys. The data, collected in the portals of the National Congress through keywords linked to the theme of gender political violence, will be parliamentary speeches. The analyses will seek to understand the discursive disputes around gender and ideology.

Parents and guardians of children diagnosed with or suspected of having neurodevelopmental disorders are confronted with a vast amount of new and complex information they must navigate, all while finding themselves in a state of emotional vulnerability due to concerns about their child's health. However, the complexity of the subject has not always been addressed in the care provided by public or private services. To bridge this gap, the following were developed: a) a literacy activity regarding the history and current understanding of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD), offered to the mothers participating in this research; and b) the present study, which aimed to analyze whether or not changes occurred in their statements and discourse following the course completion. This is, therefore, a qualitative and interpretivist study that employed Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) and discursive ethnography (Magalhães; Martins; Resende, 2017) as its theoretical-methodological framework—approaches well-suited to the study. Linguistic analysis, grounded in the Critical Discourse Analysis perspective proposed by Fairclough (2003, 1992 [2001], 1995 [2010]), and Chouliaraki and Fairclough (1999) was carried out on texts generated through semi-structured interviews with mothers of children who had received a diagnosis or were undergoing diagnostic assessment. These interviews took place before and after the mothers participated in a literacy activity entitled History and Current Issues Regarding Neurodevelopmental Disorders. The prevailing influence in the statements analyzed was that of current hegemonic neuropsychiatric/biomedical discourse and that of social rights linked to the Social Model of Disability. Though, initially, without the interviewees clearly recognizing these discursive dimensions and their implications. The process of the literacy activity enabled the participating mothers to employ to some extent the same vocabulary and other textual elements, yet with greater discernment regarding the importance of the explicit and implicit discursive and social struggles in which they participate.

This master’s degree thesis has the purpose of analyzing the anaphoric resumption of pronouns in Brazilian and Uruguayan Portuguese after comparing bilingual and monolingual speakers who live in the town of Aceguá in southern Brazil near the Uruguayan border. A corpus with interviews that was collected by Pacheco (2014) was analyzed. Besides that, a theoretical research was made about bilingualism, language contact and the syntax of the null object in Portuguese, Spanish and other languages. As a secondary goal, we highlight the typological analysis of the null object in different languages. The main theoretical part of the research is the theory of variation by Labov (1972) and the theory of linguistic change by Labov, Weinreich and Herzog (1968). We also analyze whether there was a convergence of grammars. The quantitative analysis, that was made with the help of the program Goldvarb X shows that the null object (52,8%) is the most frequent form of the anaphoric resumption, followed by the personal pronoun (27,5%), repetition of the noun phrase (18,3%) and finally the clitic (1,3%). This statistical result shows that, in the linguistic and social level, the selected variables, in the general statistical overview are the syntactic function of the antecedent, animacy, specificity and age. Regarding age, participants over 50 tend to use other forms of anaphoric reference more frequently and null objects less frequently, with relative weights of 0.680 and 0.320, respectively. Among participants aged 30–50 and 15–30, the difference is minimal, with relative weights of 0.580/0.420 and 0.579/0.421, respectively. Thus, the main difference in null object use occurs between participants over 50 and those in the other age groups. In the overview with only Uruguayans, the selected variables were animacy, with relative weight of 0,734 for animate objects and 0,215 for inanimate and age, with 0,320 for older adults, 0,580 for young people and o,579 for adults. In the selected analysis, animacy emerges as the main and most stable conditioning of the null object in all rounds, followed by specificity only in Brazilian Portuguese and in the both nationalities together; age represents a social relevant effect although more localized in the round of Uruguayan Portuguese and in the joint round; and the syntactic function adds an important dimensional structural only in the joint round. The percentage of the round of Brazilians is 56,6% of null object and 33,4% of other forms of anaphoric resumption. In Uruguayans, there is 46,6% of null object and 43,4% of other forms of anaphoric resumptions.

This doctoral thesis presents a narrative from the researcher-teacher's perspective (escrevivência) to analyze how current Linguistic Policies concerning the education of deaf individuals in Brazil affect the pedagogical praxiologies of English teachers in the city of Boa Vista – RR. To achieve this, several theoretical perspectives are considered. Firstly, it traces a historical path of the deaf community in the world on a macro scale, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, before narrowing to a micro perspective, recounting personal stories of deaf individuals in Boa Vista through the researcher’s narrative. Regarding Linguistic Policies, the works of Carlos Skliar (1996; 1998; 2006) and Rajagopalan (2013) are referenced, as they emphasize the importance of consulting deaf individuals and involving them in the formulation of policies that directly benefit them. The observed Linguistic Policies are Brazilian legal documents (laws and decrees) used as objects of research. To contribute to the historical construction of the researcher-teacher’s narrative, a semi-structured interview was conducted with two family members—my mother and my sister—who are key protagonists in the research. They help recall my first encounter with a deaf person during my childhood. Next, I recount, through my autobiography, the experiences I have had with deaf individuals throughout my life, highlighting two key moments: the first relates to my experience in high school, and the second to the moment when I had to teach English in a class that included a deaf student. I present how the weaknesses of official Brazilian documents have impacted my praxioloxies as an English teacher, both in public and private educational settings. The conclusion drawn is that, despite the numerous studies and achievements in deaf education, significant barriers still exist, and there is a long way to go before we can truly claim to have an inclusive society. Furthermore, the practice of ―escrevivência‖ can help record the micro-praxiologies of teachers who work with deaf students, thereby contributing to toher education professionals seeking new experiences to learn from and apply in their own praxiologies.

The Brazilian Northeast constitutes not only a space of strong historical and cultural tradition, but also a strategic territory for development, innovation, and knowledge production, although it has historically remained on the margins of national educational debates and internationalization agendas. Anchored in the contributions of decoloniality and Critical Applied Linguistics, this thesis aims to map and critically analyze State International Exchange Programs, with a special focus on those implemented by seven of the nine Northeastern states, examining their meanings, limits, and contributions as locally oriented Language Policies in the context of Educational Internationalization in the post-Science without Borders Program period. More specifically, this research investigates how these programs, aimed at students and teachers in basic and higher education within public networks, are institutionally constituted and how the mechanisms of Language Policy operate (Shohamy, 2006), seeking to understand both their promises of democratizing access to learning additional languages and the possible openings for breaking persistent colonial logics. Methodologically, the research is based on Social Cartography, understood as a rhizomatic method of analysis, which articulates the critical reading of legislation, calls for proposals, and official documents, the monitoring of media and institutional discourses in digital environments, as well as interviews with managers directly involved in the conception and execution of the programs. Thematic Analysis helped reveal results that point to these Programs as dynamic public policies, marked by discontinuities, inequalities, and processes of copying, frequently developed with limited teacher participation and weak institutionalization of monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. As mechanisms of Language Policies, the Programs also show themselves to be traversed by power struggles in their conception and materialization. Nevertheless, they show significant potential for transforming local realities, particularly through the promotion of additional language teaching, the expansion of linguistic and cultural immersion experiences abroad, and the reconfiguration of educational expectations for students historically excluded from these circuits. Therefore, this thesis argues that these Programs operate within a field of tensions between reproduction and rupture, in which possibilities for (re)constructing the reality of Northeast of Brazil are inscribed.

In this thesis, we research Dialogical Literary Gatherings (DLGs), successful educational action defined by the European Union's landmark program (INCLUD-ED) and developed in several countries in Europe and the Americas. Our goal is to understand how Dialogic Literary Gatherings are constituted at the linguistic-discursive level and what literacy functions are realized. We assume, on the one hand, a linguistic-discursive approach; and, on the other, dialogical-educational, according to Freire (1979), Flecha (1997), Flecha and Puigvert (2003) and Oliver and Gatt (2010). We anchor ourselves in Halliday (1973), Halliday (2001), Martin and White (2005), Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) and Gerhardt and Fuzer (2020); and we correlated the results of these analyzes to the principles of dialogical learning, according to Flecha (1997). We investigated how interaction happens in dialogical communicative acts, (Oliver and Gatt, 2010) according to Dialogical Learning. Initially, we carried out bibliographical research and selected three DLGs held with students of various ages and in different situations. Initial results indicate: a) recurrence of the interlocutor’s affective perception; b) dominance of genres that fulfill the communicative purpose of engaging; c) empathy as a defining aspect of the audience; d) low percentage of monoglossic utterances creating misalignments; e) significant weight of validation meanings in the construction of alignment; f) absence of monoglossic statements from the moderators with the purpose of constructing propositions and misalignments in relation to the students' propositions; g) alignment positions representing more than 85% of statements in the three DLGs, both in propositions and proposals; h) attitude of judgment tending to occur in the form of propositions that refer to the behavior of characters in the narratives read; i) tendency of moderators to use proposals and avoid propositions; j) little use of gradation markers in the moderators’ statements; k) tendency for the gradation of quantity – with greater occurrence – to be mobilized in proposals, for interactional control; and l) absence of high intensity gradation markers that were grading non-negotiable positions in propositions in the moderators' statements. Given this, we assume that DLG builds a supportive audience. All this data related to lexico-grammatical, semantic-discursive levels and the cultural context allows us to argue that TLD builds a supportive audience, marked by empathy and tolerance for various subject positions, which – in our understanding – contributes decisively to the educational success of this literacy practice. In addition, we were able to demonstrate – through the analysis of the interventions carried out in the TLDs – literacy functions which we define as "critical function", "reflective function" and "educational function". We showed that these literacy functions are essential for the development of reading, for the appreciation of literary texts and for the recognition of the role of school practices in the formation of critical and reflective readers.

This thesis investigates visual literacy as a critical social practice through the analysis of three sculptures by Alfredo Ceschiatti in Brasília: As Gêmeas (Itamaraty Palace), Minerva (Central Library, University of Brasília), and A contorcionista (Claudio Santoro National Theater). It aims to examine how these works, as multimodal texts, construct meaning concerning femininity and power discourses. The methodology employs a transdisciplinary triangulation of three analytical axes: femininity, multimodality, and discourse of power. This investigative path is metaphorically mapped using children's tales, adopting a rhizomatic research posture. The analysis proceeds in two interconnected stages. First, a theoretical-ludic chapter examines paradigmatic cases from art history (such as The Arnolfini portrait and A redenção de Cam) to exercise and refine the tools of social semiotics and critical discourse analysis. This conceptual toolkit is then strategically applied (or “pouvilhado,” in the terms of the thesis) in the subsequent analytical chapters dedicated to Ceschiatti's sculptures. The research demonstrates that these works perform a canonical aesthetic conciliation, producing a harmonious visual language that naturalizes specific social hierarchies. However, this conciliation is shown to be perpetually contaminated by historical tensions and intertextual networks linking the sculptures to other narratives, thus constituting them as sites of symbolic struggle. The thesis concludes by positing critical visual literacy—as operationalized through its methodological trajectory—as an essential epistemic and pedagogical tool for denaturalizing the visual artifacts of public space.

This dissertation analyzes interactions between Brazilian and foreign students within a teletandem project, aiming to investigate the ideological disputes, meaning-making processes, and subject positions that emerge from the translanguaging praxiologies constructed by participants. Grounded in Critical Applied Linguistics, Decolonial Theory, and the Ubuntu translanguaging framework, the study is based on the understanding that language practices in collaborative contexts are shaped by historical, political, and epistemic asymmetries. Using a qualitative, interpretivist approach, the research examines recordings of synchronous bilingual interactions to explore how participants mobilize multisemiotic resources when addressing topics related to language, culture, identity, and power, and to what extent these discursive movements reveal (de)colonial modes of thinking. The findings indicate that teletandem can function as a site for challenging and disrupting colonial normativities, where acts of listening, the recognition of difference, and collective meaning-making emerge. These practices reflect Ubuntu-inspired translanguaging principles in action and suggest that such interactions foster plural epistemologies and contribute to the construction of decolonial alternatives in the field of language education.

This thesis analyzes the specialized vocabulary of the ceremonial variety of the Awa Guajá language, used exclusively in communication with celestial beings, known as karawara by the Awá, particularly during shamanic rituals. From a terminographic perspective, the study examines the distinctive features of this variety and its main differences compared to the everyday variety. The focus is on the morphological aspects of shamanic term formation and their definitions, demonstrating that this variety constitutes a specialized language that stands out as a true form of verbal art. As the main outcome, a trilingual glossary was developed, in which the terms of the ceremonial language were translated into the everyday variety and Portuguese. The collection of terms was carried out through fieldwork, with the active collaboration of the Awá themselves, whose participation was essential to the translation process. The glossary, in addition to fulfilling its academic purpose within the scope of this research, will be adapted to meet the needs of the Awa Guajá for use in educational settings. In this way, the project aims to contribute to the preservation and safeguarding of the ceremonial specialized language of the Awa Guajá, strengthening its transmission and cultural valorization.

The aim of this study is to analyze the challenges that high school teachers of galician language and literature face in performing their duties within their own educational institutions. To conduct this analysis, we used semi-structured interviews as our primary data collection method. Based on the data collected, we conduct an analysis focused on the main issues that the interviewees identify as obstacles to their work, drawing on glotopolitics and the interplay within this field of study between ideologies and language policies and the role of language in society. In the interview guide we developed, we addressed a variety of topics. We begin with a few personal questions about the interviewee’s background, the languages they speak, and their path to becoming a Galician language teacher. These introductory questions will help the interviewee understand the dynamics of the interview and make it clear that there are no right or wrong answers; we simply want them to share their opinion based on their experience as a teacher. Following this introduction, we will address the questions we wish to ask, divided into three sections: general problems they face in their day-to-day work at schools; ideologies and attitudes they observe within the educational community; and, finally, pedagogical challenges they encounter in the process of teaching and learning Galician in the classroom. With the data collected during fieldwork and its subsequent analysis, we will be able to address the decline in the number of Galician speakers and develop strategies to improve the teaching of the language in the class

The proposal for the development of Didactic Materials presented in this thesis is grounded in a decolonial pedagogical approach that recognizes and values the perspective of Deaf teachers in the creation of teaching resources more aligned with the experiences and sociolinguistic needs of Deaf students. Valuing Deaf knowledge and adopting educational practices sensitive to plurality makes it possible to promote more equitable educational policies. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to investigate how Deaf teachers mobilize strategies of discursive semioses during the development of bilingual didactic sequences for teaching Portuguese as an additional language to Deaf students. To this end, a qualitative methodological approach with an ethnographic inspiration was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews and conversation circles. Anchored in Mediated Discourse Analysis, this investigation focused on emerging pedagogical facilitating semioses in the process of developing a bilingual didactic sequence, constructed from the autobiographical text genre. The study established dialogues with the fields of Decoloniality, Intersectionality, Critical Pedagogy, and Deaf Studies, broadening the understanding of teaching Portuguese as an additional language for/with Deaf people and the development of pedagogically sensitive didactic materials. The results highlighted the urgency of reconfiguring the traditional model of the didactic sequence, adapting it to the specificities of Deaf bilingual education. This implies the recognition of sociocultural scenarios, the centrality of Sign Language, and visuality as epistemological foundations. By recognizing the discursive choices of Deaf teachers as intentional acts, this work challenges colonial paradigms and fosters intercultural language policies. The movement to "Southernize" the teaching of Portuguese as an additional language seeks to consolidate a more equitable and ethical Deaf Pedagogy.

As locuções {hap ewakai te} e {hap eʔɨjan me te} indicam tempo posterior; os conectores {rakine} e {hawɨi} indicam tempo anterior; {turan} indica simultaneidade.

This thesis presents an analysis of complex sentences in Sateré-Mawé from a descriptive and typological-functional perspective. The study aims to: (i) identify the strategies used to relate complex utterances in this language; (ii) examine the morphosyntactic functioning of these constructions; and (iii) describe the semantic values of the units responsible for establishing relationships of dependency and independence between clauses. The analysis is based on a corpus compiled by us, in partnership with teachers and other members of the Sateré-Mawé people, consisting of oral and written texts produced in different contexts of language use. The results show that Sateré-Mawé has different mechanisms for establishing relationships between utterances, ranging from constructions with less syntactic-semantic dependency, associated with coordination, to structures with greater integration, characterized as subordination. The analysis shows that the language has a diverse system of connectors responsible for marking relationships in complex utterances. In the domain of coordination, we identified five connectors: {iʔewɨte} and {miʔite}, which express additive relationships; {maʔato}, which marks adversative relationships; and {sio}, which expresses disjunctive relationships. In the domain of subordination, different strategies can be observed that mark relationships of dependency between the subordinate clause and the main clause. Verbal complements function as actants of the main predicate and are introduced by the morphemes {hat}, {hap}, {mi-} or by the pronoun {rakat}, which act as complementizers. Adverbial constructions express circumstantial relationships between events and are marked by different connectors. The phrases {hap ewakai te} and {hap eʔɨjan me te} indicate a later time; the connectors {rakine} and {hawɨi} indicate an earlier time; {turan} indicates simultaneity. The connectors {haɨpe} and {tupono} mark a causal relationship; {pote} indicates condition; {pɨkai}, concession; and {hamo}, purpose. Relative constructions, which qualify or restrict a nominal referent, are marked by {rakat}, which functions as a relative pronoun, and by the nominalizers {hat}, {hap}, and {mi-}, whose distribution depends on the properties of the predicate and the semantic role of the relativized participant. These results contribute to expanding knowledge about the grammar of Sateré-Mawé by describing the strategies for articulating complex utterances in the language, although further research is needed to deepen our understanding of these constructions.

This study investigates the syntactic role of the causee in causative constructions formed from transitive verbs in indigenous languages of the South American Lowlands. In these constructions, the addition of a causer modifies the role of the original subject, affecting the argument structure of the predicate. With intransitive verbs, the causee typically functions as an object, whereas with transitive verbs its role can vary. The study aims to understand how these languages treat the causee in causative constructions and whether it tends to occupy central or peripheral argumental positions. Considering that causatives involve not only morphology and syntax but also semantics, pragmatics, and discourse, we adopt a functionaltypological perspective. We employ a non-categorical argumental analysis of the causee to capture the diversity of strategies documented in the theoretical literature. Methodologically, the research follows a qualitative and inductive approach. After defining the research focus, we reviewed the literature on causative constructions, selected the languages for investigation, collected data from academic sources, compiled the information in a comparative chart, and conducted comparison, analysis, and discussion. Languages were selected based on geographic and genetic criteria, prioritizing Brazilian indigenous languages and representatives of different linguistic families. To ensure consistency and comparability, a research protocol of forty-two questions was applied throughout all phases of the study. This protocol enabled the systematic organization of available descriptions and the construction of a standardized database. Using this dataset, languages were compared with each other and with trends reported in the literature. Results indicate that, in most languages studied, the causee functions as a structurally central and semantically prominent argument. A substantial portion of the typological-theoretical predictions was fully or partially confirmed, although some questions remain unresolved due to the absence of explicit analyses in the sources. Overall, findings suggest that causativity constitutes a conceptual macro-situation in which the causee serves as a central participant linking cause and effect events, highlighting the need for theoretical approaches that integrate cognitive, pragmatic, and discourse factors. Finally, based on the cross-linguistic patterns observed, we propose a theoretical analysis of the causee and a definition of causative constructions that encompasses multiple linguistic levels.

The work entitled "Sociocultural calendar of the Kalunga quilombo: in the interlaces of multiple literacies, sociolinguistics and (auto)ethnography for public policies to quilombola education" brings as a research issue the need to systematize the cycle of cultures and the ways of organizing and living Kalunga quilombola. It is a proposal that aims at legislative reformulation in order to create municipal, state and federal laws that recognize and value specific rights. The proposal contributes to teacher training in order to have it as the anchor of the training processes of professionals who work in quilombola schools or serve quilombola students. The proposal focuses on the transformation of the school model so that they include in their calendar, curriculum, content and in their pedagogy the formative matrix with the multiple quilombola literacies, thus promoting equality and educational equity. The general objective is to propose, in the light of the multiple literacies and sociolinguistics and (auto)ethnography present in the quilombola Kalunga culture, a Sociocultural Calendar as responses to inequalities in the creation and implementation of public policies such as school education. The methodology used consists of qualitative ethnographic and autoethnographic research, considering the context and the researcher as inseparable components of the research. As a result, the research presents the Sociocultural Calendar structured from two axes, so that the circularity and continuity of quilombola literacy practices evidence the political, cultural, educational, economic and social self-organization of the communities. The work challenged us to propose an instrument to combat racism and respond to inequalities in the face of the reality of public policies already instituted for us quilombolas.

This research investigates the impacts of the revocation of Law No. 11.161/2005, which established the mandatory offering of the Spanish language in secondary education, on Spanish teacher education degree programs at the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology in Brazil. The dissertation analyzes how language planning processes are configured within these institutions, including curriculum organization and strategies aimed at maintaining teacher education in the context of the weakening of the national language policy for Spanish. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach through a multiple case study design. Interviews and field visits involved the seven campuses that offer Spanish teacher education programs, ensuring representation from all regions of the country. Interviews were conducted with faculty members, with the program coordinator serving as the initial point of contact and having the possibility of including other faculty members in the research at their discretion. In addition, Course Pedagogical Projects, data from the Nilo Peçanha Platform, field notes, and information regarding the legislative context in different states were analyzed, complementing the understanding of local incentives and regulations that affect the provision and organization of Spanish language teaching. The analysis articulated three dimensions: admission, academic trajectory, and graduation outcomes, making it possible to understand both the perceived impacts and the institutional responses to the weakening of the national policy. The results indicate that the revocation of the mandatory offering of Spanish affected student profiles and access, required curricular reorganization, and mobilized institutional strategies, including movements of internal resistance that function in practice as forms of language policy aimed at maintaining teacher education and the professional integration of graduates. This research contributes to the understanding of the relationships between language policy, language planning, and institutional responses, highlighting how Spanish teacher education programs are reconfigured in order to ensure teacher training in the face of policy weakening and normative changes.

This research problematizes how language education has been influenced by discourses, practices, and policies that associate mastery of the English language with market ideals. Considering the processes of neoliberalization of language education, globalization, the coloniality of knowledge, educational reforms, discourses on performance, and the precariousness of teaching activities, we discuss how these issues permeate the constitution of the identities of English language teachers. The research arises from an interest in investigating language education and teacher identities, as well as the influence of neoliberal policies and rationalities on public education. It is argued that the teaching of English has frequently been linked to values of competitiveness and the market, reflecting colonial perspectives that can conform teaching practices to standardized models. The study is based on the concepts of identities (Hall, 2003; Silva, 2014); Tilio (2019), linguistic entrepreneurship (De Costa; Park; Wee, 2021), capitalist realism and paralyzing fatalism (Fisher, 2020), coloniality of knowledge and power (Quijano, 2005), education as a practice of freedom Freire (1967); hooks (2013), critical linguistic education (Pennycook, 1994); Canagarajah (1999); Norton (2013); Mastrella-de-Andrade (2019); Pessoa (2019) and neoliberalism in education Laval (2004); Charlot (2020). The objective of this work is to discuss and problematize the processes of identity construction among English language teachers in Centros Interescolares de Línguas (CILs) of the Federal District, considering the current scenario of neoliberalization of teaching activities, and discussing how the neoliberalization of English language teaching policies operates in this identity construction process. The specific objectives are: to discuss how hegemonic knowledge engendered in social relations operates in the construction of conformist identities; to discuss how the precariousness of teaching work influences the construction of the identity processes of these teachers; and to problematize how teachers find ways to resignify and resist the impacts of the neoliberalization of education on their teaching identities. The research adopts a critical qualitative approach, from an interpretative perspective (Moita Lopes, 1994), and is based on the research-training methodology (Silvestre, 2016), which articulates, simultaneously and reflectively, the processes of research and training. The empirical material was generated during a training program consisting of six meetings with English language teachers from the CILs (Language Centers) of the Federal District. The instruments used were recordings of the online meetings, activities developed by the participants, and a field diary. The results demonstrate that teacher identities are constituted through the articulation between hegemonic knowledge, material working conditions, and possibilities for resistance. Discourses related to idealized fluency, high performance, linguistic entrepreneurship, and the figure of the productive teacher operate in the construction of teacher identities, producing feelings of inadequacy and self-blame. Teacher working conditions proved central to the constitution of identities, influencing praxeologies and professional recognition. At the same time, the research showed that collaborative practices constitute resistance to the individualizing logic of education. Finally, this thesis contributes to showing how discourses of power are present in the constitution of teaching identities, how neoliberal logic and coloniality permeate language education, and how collectivity presents itself as a force of resistance and creation of alternative possibilities for public contexts of language education.

This dissertation aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the grammar of post-verbal auxiliary constructions in the Northern Jê languages (< Jê < Macro-Jê), integrating synchronic descriptions with proposals for the diachronic reconstruction of their proto-constructions. It begins with an overview of the clausal morphosyntax of these languages, emphasizing the distinctions between finite and non-finite clauses and the implications of these differences for morphosyntactic alignment and constituent encoding. Particular attention is also given to certain innovations, most notably the development of a nominative postposition derived from a relativizer in the Tapajós languages. The dissertation then examines a set of specific constructions selected to represent each domain of Tense-Aspect-Modality/Evidentiality-Polarity (TAMP). Chapter 2 is devoted to negation constructions, describing the distribution of the reflexes of the two auxiliaries *inõare and *ket, as well as their evolutionary pathways across the different subgroups of Northern Jê. Chapter 3 investigates the postposition *-do, mapping its multiple co-grammaticalized functions (comitative, instrumental, ornamental, perlative, thematic, and temporal) and proposing grammaticalization pathways that underlie part of the post-verbal constructions. Chapter 4 focuses on associated motion (AM) and imperfective constructions, demonstrating that their aspectual values emerge from the interaction between motion verbs (mõ/-mõr, tẽ/-tẽm, mbra/-mbrar, *-ba) and the internal structure of the event. Chapter 5 addresses associated posture (AP) constructions, showing the transition from full posture verbs to aspectual auxiliaries (progressive, continuous, continuative, and habitual) and proposing a three-stage evolutionary pathway (associated posture > imperfective > continuative/habitual), culminating in habitual markers in the Tapajós languages and Mẽhĩ. Finally, Chapter 6 explores a set of constructions expressing projection-related notions (epistemic modality, prospective aspect, and future tense) in the Trans-Araguaia languages, proposing that they originated from constructions involving dynamic locative postpositions

In general, the categories of tense, aspect, and mood (TAM) are linked to verbs, given that verbs more easily and frequently shift in time, and also convey information about duration, completion, and the speaker’s attitude toward the described event (cf. Givón, 2001; Comrie, 1976). However, it has been observed that some languages — such as Paraguayan Guarani, a language from the Tupi-Guarani (TG) family — exhibit tense and aspect features associated with noun phrases (cf., for example, Nordlinger & Sadler (1998, 2004); Barron (1998); Tonhauser (2002, 2007)). Like Paraguayan Guarani, other languages in the TG family also have forms referred to as either tense or aspect associated with noun phrases, represented by cognates of pwér ‘past’ and rám ‘future’. In this context, this research selected three languages of the TG family — Tupinambá, Apyãwa, and Nheengatu — to discuss how these forms function in mythical narratives in order to understand their use in the transformation of mythological beings into elements of nature or culture. For instance, in a narrative in Nheengatu, Jurupari’s liver transforms into flour, and this transformation is marked by the morpheme known as the nominal past. By analyzing the use of these forms in discourse, this study aims to expand the discussion around the so-called nominal “past” and “future,” and to examine whether these forms indeed represent nominal tense or whether they align more closely with aspect. For the analysis, a series of narratives produced during the colonial period by Jesuit priests was selected for Tupinambá; for Apyãwa and Nheengatu, mythical narratives collected in fieldwork by Praça (2007) and Cruz (2011), respectively, were used. Thus, this study addresses and discusses data in narratives — that is, in actual language use — which marks a key difference in the proposed analysis, since previous research in this area has relied only on elicited data.

This research proposes a dialogue between official curricula and the identity-based curricular matrices of language teachers in basic education. Its objective is to propose the construction of a curricular matrix based on the inscribed discourses of language teachers from the state education network in the city of Gurupi/Tocantins, participants in the Postgraduate Program in Languages in the curricular component Public Policies for Language Teaching offered by IFTO/Campus Gurupi. The work is justified by the researcher's experiences with curricula and curricular matrices throughout her personal and professional trajectory. The theoretical framework is situated within Critical Applied Linguistics (CAL), an area of knowledge focused on developing research that prioritizes discussions about social and political linguistic demands (MOITA LOPES, 1998; RAJAGOPALAN, 2003 and 2019; GECAL, 2026; 2025; 2024; 2023; 2022). The methodological design of this study was inspired by Chang (2016) and is formed by the triad: identity orientation, cultural orientation – the curriculum, and methodological orientation – teacher training. The identity issues are situated within reflections on identity (HULL, 2001); Akotirene (2017), Carneiro (1987); Collins and Silva (2021), Foucault (2010); Nuñez (2023); on the curriculum (SAVIANI, 2016; SACRISTÁN, 2013; YOUNG; 2014; SILVA, 2002; VEIGA, 2002 and Silva (2005; 2001; 2000 and 1995); on curricular matrices for language teaching (DUBOC, 2015; SILVA and MAKALELA, 2024; MONTE MÓR, 2013; SOUSA, 2019, 2011; TÍLIO, 2023 and MACIEL, 2013) and teacher training from their intersectionalities (COLLINS, 2021; COLLINS, DA SILVA and GOMES, 2021; COLLINS, 2000; AKOTIRENE, 2017; CARNEIRO, 1987; and VARGAS, (2025). The research methodology is qualitative and interpretative in nature, supported by the principles of autoethnographic and documentary research focused on the continuing education of teachers and the construction of knowledge. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method (BARDIN, 2016), focusing on their teaching and learning contexts. As a contribution of the research, it is expected to produce a Portuguese Language curriculum matrix – 1st year of High School – based on the values and epistemologies present in the documents and trajectories of the language teachers in the municipal education of the city of Gurupi/Tocantins.

This study aims to develop and analyze term-signs related to illicit drugs in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), proposing the construction of a bilingual lexicon (Libras–Portuguese) aimed at expanding linguistic accessibility in specialized contexts. The research is based on the observation that the absence of specialized terminology in Libras compromises communication and access to technical information for deaf individuals, particularly in the fields of public security, education, and the justice system. To address this gap, the study draws upon the theoretical foundations of Terminology, Terminography, Lexicography, and Sign Language Linguistics to guide the creation, analysis, and systematization of term-signs. The research adopts a qualitative and exploratory approach, involving a bibliographic review, analysis of existing lexical repertoires, identification of terminological gaps, and the development of new term-signs based on linguistic, conceptual, and cultural criteria, which were subsequently validated by deaf specialists. The study also examines the morphological and structural aspects of Libras, including handshape, movement, and non-manual markers, which are essential to the formation of term-signs. As a result, a bilingual lexicon with audiovisual records is presented to enhance terminological precision and communication in situations involving drug prevention, police approaches, and other institutional contexts. This research contributes to the development of specialized terminology in Libras, strengthens scientific production in the field, and expands the linguistic resources available for specialized communication within the deaf community.

Esta tese investiga a terminologia das epistemologias negras no contexto acadêmico brasileiro, considerando os termos como unidades linguísticas e políticas que participam da constituição e da circulação de sistemas de conhecimento. Partiu-se do pressuposto que a produção terminológica nomeia conceitos e contribui para legitimar experiências e saberes historicamente marginalizados pela colonialidade e pelo racismo. O corpus é constituído por 72 termos identificados em produções de autoria e de referência negra, analisados quanto à circulação acadêmica, à formação lexical, às definições e às relações semânticas. Para a análise da circulação, foi selecionada uma amostra correspondente a um terço do corpus, investigada no Catálogo de Teses e Dissertações da CAPES e na SciELO, considerando anos de publicação e áreas de conhecimento. A análise linguístico-terminológica fundamenta-se, sobretudo, nos estudos da Terminologia de perspectiva comunicativa e socioterminológica, articulados a contribuições dos estudos lexicais, semânticos e das epistemologias negras. Os resultados evidenciam a expressiva interdisciplinaridade dos termos, sua circulação crescente na produção acadêmica recente e uma composição lexical africanas e híbridas. As definições e os campos semânticos revelam recorrências em torno do saber, da resistência, da ancestralidade, do corpo, da memória, da linguagem, da identidade e de críticas à colonialidade e aos sistemas de opressão. Conclui-se que a terminologia analisada constitui um repertório conceitual em expansão que, ao nomear experiências e produzir categorias interpretativas próprias, amplia os domínios da linguagem acadêmica e desloca sujeitos negros da condição de objetos de conhecimento para a posição de agência. Desse modo, os termos analisados atuam também como operadores políticos da língua, participando das disputas por legitimidade epistemológica e por espaços de poder no campo científico;

This thesis investigates the terminology of Black epistemologies in the Brazilian academic context, considering terms as linguistic and political units that participate in the constitution and circulation of systems of knowledge. It was assumed that the terminological production names concepts and contributes to legitimizing experiences and forms of knowledge historically marginalized by coloniality and racism. The corpus consists of 72 terms identified in works by Black authors and in scholarship grounded in Black intellectual traditions, analyzed in terms of academic circulation, lexical formation, definitions, and semantic relations. For the analysis of circulation, a sample corresponding to one third of the corpus was selected and examined in the CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog and SciELO, considering years of publication and fields of knowledge. The linguistic and terminological analysis is grounded primarily in communicative and socioterminological approaches to Terminology, articulated with contributions from lexical and semantic studies and from Black epistemologies. The results reveal the significant interdisciplinarity of the terms, their increasing circulation in recent academic production, and a lexical composition marked by African and hybrid formations. The definitions and semantic fields reveal recurring themes related to knowledge, resistance, ancestry, body, memory, language, identity, and critiques of coloniality and systems of oppression. It is concluded that the terminology analyzed constitutes an expanding conceptual repertoire that, by naming experiences and producing its own interpretive categories, broadens the domains of academic language and shifts Black subjects from the condition of objects of knowledge to positions of agency. In this sense, the terms analyzed also operate as political agents within language, participating in disputes over epistemological legitimacy and spaces of power in the scientific field;

This thesis takes as its object of inquiry an action aimed at social transformation, rather than a social problem, as is traditionally the case in Critical Discourse Studies (Wodak; Meyer, 2009). By investigating the course Recognizing Sexual Diversity in Schools (Reconhecendo a Diversidade Sexual na Escola), offered by EAPE to education professionals from the Federal District Department of Education (SEEDF) over three semesters (2022–2023), this research sought, as its general objective, to analyze how this continuing education initiative prompted participating education professionals to critically reflect on their schools and to change, to some extent, their own political-pedagogical practices. The specific objectives were to examine how course participants represent the school spaces in which they work with regard to the presence of LGBTIphobic discourse and its impacts; to investigate how the development of interventionoriented pedagogical actions, as well as the practices of the participants who developed them, can provide theoretical and pedagogical resources for an anti-LGBTIphobic education; and to assess possible changes in the participants’ identification processes after the training and how, where present, these changes affect their political-pedagogical practices. Methodologically grounded in Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), this thesis adopts a critical realist approach to reality (Bhaskar, 1998), combined with an ethnographic, discursive, and intersectional perspective (Crenshaw, 1989; 2004). It is qualitative and interpretivist, employing a dialectical-relational and transformational method (Fairclough, 1992; 2003; Chouliaraki; Fairclough, 1999) to investigate the potential of continuing education focused on sexual diversity and gender to reconstitute school practices. To this end, 27 former RDSE course participants took part in the research through their accounts and written productions. Semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and documentary analysis were therefore used as instruments for data collection and generation. Theoretically, in order to analytically approach this action of social transformation and produce knowledge about it, I draw on Critical Discourse Studies (Chouliaraki; Fairclough, 1999; Dias, 2011; Resende, 2017; Gomes, 2020; Carvalho, 2024), Gender Studies (Butler, 2017; 2018; 2022; 2024; Louro, 2011; 2014; 2015; 2016), and Critical Pedagogy (Freire, 1978; 1996; Walsh, 2013; 2017; hooks, 2017; 2021), given the complexity of the object under investigation. In terms of analysis, the excerpts generated/collected were selected according to rhetorical movements of reading in light of the research questions, which relate to each of the dimensions of textual meaning (actional/relational, identificational, and representational). Following their selection, the excerpts were analyzed through a process of description, interpretation, and critical explanation, in which the analytical categories of Intertextuality, Semantic Relations, Representation of Social Actors, Transitivity System, Appraisal, and Modality were fundamental for identifying the textual traces left by the participants and relating them to the potential for change and social emancipation envisioned through continuing education. The findings indicate that participants consider the texts used during the training, the course methodology, the trainer’s mediation, and the exchange of experiences and other forms of knowledge with their peers to have been important elements in the changes they perceive in themselves, in their practices, and in the ways they represent their school spaces. These elements thus acted as catalysts for critical reflection and, consequently, also contributed to the reconstitution of these individuals’ political-pedagogical practices to some extent. It is possible to observe that, after participating in the continuing education initiative, these professionals represent their schools differently. In this sense, the school is represented as a contradictory space in which hegemonic maintenance operates around projects of domination ideologically invested in cisheteropatriarchy, with school management teams being portrayed as detached/absent (Filice, 2010) when they address discussions of gender and sexuality only sporadically, adopting conservative positions, or even as a result of the interference of members of a military management structure in pedagogical matters. At the same time, some participants represent the school as a space of resistance, based on the possibility of fostering critical and reflective engagement with their peers’ attitudes toward issues of representation in children’s imaginaries, developing strategies to confront sexism and LGBTIphobia as early as the first years of elementary education, and recognizing the critical engagement of a proactive school management team in relation to the care and protection of children. Finally, when these professionals reflect on themselves before and after the RDSE, changes can be observed in how they perceive themselves as social agents: they report a more active and sensitive form of listening and feel more supported and less afraid to discuss the topics addressed in the training. Some participants also reported changes in their self-perception, such as feeling more empowered as women, understanding themselves as Black people, or recognizing a particular form of identification as a positive possibility. These changes also affect their practices and the ways in which they perceive their students.

International migratory movements have gained increasing relevance in light of the transformations produced by capitalist and neoliberal societies. In 2024, approximately 120 million people were forcibly displaced as a result of wars, hunger, violence, and human rights violations. These movements involve not only political, economic, and institutional dimensions, but also the histories, experiences, and needs of people who experience displacement. Among contemporary migratory flows, the migration of Venezuelan people in Latin America stands out, reaching approximately 6.1 million people, according to data from the United Nations Refugee Agency (2024). In this context, groups such as women and LGBT populations are particularly vulnerable, although their experiences still occupy limited space in debates on mobility. Beyond institutional discourses, this research seeks to understand the experiences of people who often remain invisible in these processes. The objective is to investigate and discuss the discursive representations constructed by Venezuelan trans women regarding their migratory trajectories while living in shelter in Boa Vista, Roraima. This is an ethnographic-discursive study conducted at Pricumã Shelter, whose corpus consists of interviews, observations, field note and photographs. Critical Discourse Studies ( Chouliaraki; Fairclough, 1999; Wodak; Meyer, 2001; Fairclough, 2003), articulated with Gender Studies and an intersectional perspective (Bento, 2008; Lugones, 2019; Anzaldúa, 2021; Louro, 2022), provide the theoretical and methodological foundations of the investigation. The results reveal that, for the participants, migration is related to processes of exclusion and violence that began within the family and extend across other institutions and social spaces. In narrating their trajectories, the participants represent themselves and give meaning to their spatiotemporal movements, constructing possibilities for action and (re)existence at the borders. The analysis of Pricumã Shelter as a particular practice, in turn, reveals a semiotic landscape in which discourses of care, welcoming, and control are articulated and recontextualized in different semiotic elements, contributing to the production of meanings about migration and sheltering.

This thesis is the result of a life-research. The research was conducted within the context of implementing the Countryside Basic Education model in Brazlândia, in the Federal District. The investigation aimed to analyze how the personal linkings that teachers in rural schools have with peasant ways of life influence their identity construction as Countryside Educators and the implementation of Countryside Education. Throughout the thesis, the autoethnographic literacy processes of the research(er) group, of which I am a member, are interwoven. These processes evoke the movements of the hands of countryside women who cook to nourish both the bodies and the emotional well-being of those who work the soil. To engaging in and fostering these literacy practices, we influence changes in the traditional school model, as we understand and put into practice SEEDF Ordinance No. 419/2018. Our work is shaped by our connections to peasant ways of life. As the daughter, granddaughter, niece, and goddaughter of countryside ex-workers, and as a Rural Educator myself (in the making), I view the peasant countryside as my epistemological and enunciative locus. From this standpoint, I conduct interpretive analyses of the semantic-sociodiscursive constructions found in texts authored by teachers from the early years of elementary education in Brazlândia’s countryside schools, texts that reveal their ties to peasant life. The analyses focus on the ontopolitical confluences between Interactional Sociolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Countryside Education. Representational, identificational, and actional meanings are revealed as being inextricably linked to interactions within literacy practices and (trans)formative writing. To ground the research, the analyses, and the construction of the thesis, artistic inspirations and empirical influences were brought into dialogue with the bibliographic references. By drawing on metaphor and poetic language to discuss what lies beneath the calluses on our hands, we come to understand how awareness of our own origins, identities, and performativities, within the social role of Countryside Educators, shapes the construction of Countryside Schools in the peasant territories of Brazlândia. Furthermore, the validity of original writing as a cultural artifact for social interaction and literacy is demonstrated when it is employed within the framework of a community of practice, learning, and change.

As proposições permanecem abertas a desenvolvimento e confronto empírico posteriores.

This thesis investigates how teacher assessment literacy manifests in the Practical Training Course for Bidding Officers and Support Team, offered by Brazil's National School of Public Administration (Enap), whose certification is based exclusively on learner participation. In this context, without formal assessment mechanisms, the study investigates which evidence guides teachers’ decisions and pedagogical practice. The central hypothesis assumes that the absence of such mechanisms does not eliminate assessment practices but reconfigures them, shifting them from the institutional sphere to teaching practice and grounding them in implicit references. The general objective analyzes the teacher assessment-literacy practices mobilized in this context, unfolding into the following specific objectives: to examine institutional guidelines on learning assessment; to characterize the teacher profile envisaged by the School; to map the assessment practices of facilitators; to understand the perceptions of teachers, learners, and managers; and to propose guidelines for a diagnostic instrument on teacher assessment literacy and foundations for a training program in this area. The study draws on the Assessment Literacy framework (Stiggins, 1995; Fulcher, 2012; Taylor, 2013) and on Quevedo-Camargo and Scaramucci's (2018) formulation of assessment literacy as a situated social practice in adult professional training. The research starts from the documentary analysis of Enap's call for new collaborators — currently designated teacherfacilitators — and the criteria for admission to the Collaborators' Bank. Applied, descriptive-analytical, and mixed-methods in nature, the research combines this documentary analysis with questionnaires featuring Likert-scale statements and openended questions, administered to teachers, learners, and managers. Of 43 responses received, screening retained 36: 29 from learners, five from teachers, and two from managers. Data treatment integrated interpretive content analysis (Bardin, 1977), descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients, Spearman correlation, and source triangulation. The results indicate manifestations of teacher assessment literacy associated with monitoring learning objectives, pedagogical interaction, and practical situations with evaluative potential, showing convergence among participant groups but greater heterogeneity in the explicit recognition of alignment between objectives and assessment. Documentary analysis identified institutional references to formative assessment whose translation into shared criteria and recorded evidence proved uneven. The research sustains the hypothesis at its core and refines it: the reconfiguration of assessment practices occurs at the interface between institutional guidelines, professional knowledge, and situated teaching decisions. Without direct classroom observation, the findings do not constitute an objective measure of learning or assessment proficiency. As an applied contribution, the thesis proposes guidelines for a diagnosticformative approach centered on reflexive teacher self-assessment and foundations for creating the Enap Program for Teacher Assessment Literacy for Professional Training (Programa Enap de LADF), organized around the axes of Meaning, Action, and Mediation. As a theoretical contribution to Linguistics, the research proposes Teacher Assessment Literacy for Professional Training (LADF) as an emerging, situated analytical category, focused on the mobilization of knowledge, practices, principles, and discursive resources in the production, interpretation, communication, and use of professional learning evidence. The propositions remain open to further development and empirical confrontation.

This thesis aims to develop a lexicographic corpus of signs and specialized signs selected within the context of the course Fundamentals of Deaf Education, with the purpose of documenting and analyzing their linguistic characteristics from the perspective of the linguistic heritage of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The study draws on research concerning linguistic variation, lexicography, and sign language documentation, particularly the contributions of Castro Júnior (2014), Tuxi (2017), Prometi (2020), Goettert (2023), and Rossi (2025). This qualitative, descriptive, and documentary study involved the selection, audiovisual recording, linguistic description, and systematic organization of 30 signs and specialized signs. The analysis considered handshape (HS), location (LOC), movement (M), directionality (D), and facial and/or bodily expressions. As a result, a lexicographic corpus was developed with a macrostructure and microstructure comprising lexicographic records linked to audiovisual recordings accessible through QR codes. This organization brought together linguistic and visual information within a documentary framework while respecting the specific characteristics of the recorded units, without seeking linguistic standardization. The findings demonstrate that lexicographic systematization, combined with audiovisual resources, provides an approach to documenting Libras and preserving linguistic information for future research. Within the scope of the study, it is concluded that the corpus contributes to linguistic documentation and establishes opportunities for expanding the documentation of Libras in the Sertão Potiguar region, connecting linguistic diversity, memory, and linguistic heritage.

Historically, translation assessment in educational settings lacked traits regarded as essential to sound assessment practices, namely, its formative function, its capacity to identify learning needs, and to provide constructive feedback. The lecture-based model is a perspective that still permeates many teaching-learning and assessment practices and places excessive emphasis on the figure of the teacher and on the authorized version of their texts to the detriment of learners' needs and expectations. Assessment approaches such as this, which are subjective and lack clear evaluative criteria, apart from compromising the learning process, exacerbate the risk of causing demotivation or becoming meaningless to students. In this context, the present work aims to develop a pedagogical tool for translation assessment that provides sufficiently contextualized feedback to trigger incremental progress (feedforward) in learners' performance. Drawing on genre studies (Swales) and corpus-based assessment methodology (Bowker, 2001 Corpus-based approach to Translation Evaluation), the construct to be assessed by the multidimensional tool envisioned in this work is ‘translation quality’, reflected in the following pillars: completeness of the source text content; linguistic accuracy in normative contexts of production; and similarity of the translation to prototypical texts. In order to carry out this methodological endeavor, we aimed to implement an AI-agent based tool with in-context learning, using structured prompts and a knowledge base. Large language model fine-tuning is also foreseen in future stages to enable the assessing tool to capture rhetorical, structural and phraseological characteristics and patterns of the genre selected to test the tool, namely the abstract, and to use the information of the training corpus to provide contextualized, authentic and data-based feedback. Thus, given the current scenario of increasing obsolescence of the human translator and its replacement by generative intelligence technologies, we must consider alternative ways of learning, teaching and assessing translation in order to prepare students to enter an ever-changing labor market.

This study examines parliamentary discourse produced by right-wing members of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies between 2019 and 2026. It aims to identify recurring argumentative strategies in legislative debates shaped by disputes over concepts such as freedom of expression and democracy, among others, and to investigate how their linguistic and discursive features may reveal aspects of parliamentarians’ identities and ideologies. Drawing on the theoretical and methodological framework of Critical Discourse Studies, the research examines how fallacious argumentation, disinformation, impoliteness, and the delegitimization of opposing groups function as prominent discursive resources in a context of intense political polarization. The study is based on documentary research and adopts an explanatory and interpretive approach. Its corpus comprises parliamentary speeches and legislative proposal texts available on the official website of the Chamber of Deputies.
