The school subject Science traditionally occupies a prominent place in the Brazilian curriculum. Throughout its history, the subject is conceived by the science teaching in at least three different ways that, in addition to being influenced by global movements, result from the existence of different conceptions of science and its teaching objectives. In this scenario, we noticed that currently the perspectives associated with Inquiry-based Teaching have been earning space in curriculum policies, especially those related to high school, a stage of basic education in which scientific inquiry appears, in the new policies, as one of the axes for the development of diversified part of the curriculum. Understanding the curriculum as a cultural production which results of signification practices, we consider that the existing discourses at a time influence the foundations of teaching and are reflected in schools. In this way, this study aims to make visible the way in which statements referring to scientific inquiry are articulated in the production of a system of reason that ends up regulating the elaboration of curricular policies. After tracing a historical overview of science teaching and the different perspectives associated with investigation, we carried out a survey of the academic production related to scientific inquiry and an analysis of two of the main curricular policies in force for basic education. Using a discursive approach inspired by Foucauldian studies, we seek to identify the meanings that constitute what comes to be called scientific investigation by the academic field, in order to understand the processes involved in the acceptance, significance and legitimation of such statements by curricular policies.
