FROM THE HEART DOWN: Firehosing, Cognitive Linguistics and the attacks by the Hate Office against Alexandre de Moraes
Cognitive linguistics, Firehosing, Fake News, Brazil, Democracy
The research problem is called Firehosing. It is a process described in documents from the Federal Supreme Court (in the Fake News and Anti-Democratic Acts investigations). His theory serves as the basis for all the legal arguments that, for example, led to the request for the arrest of Bolsonaro blogger Allan dos Santos. Firehosing is an extremely functional method of propaganda and disinformation. We perceive in the dynamics of Firehosing a series of concepts related to Cognitive Linguistics, such as conceptual metaphor and frames, which contribute to explaining its success among those immersed in this parallel world created by the disinformation ecosystem (SANTANA, 2023). It is important to note that any study that proposes a minimally robust study of what has been happening in Brazilian political and democratic society must take into account the following challenge: there is no way to carry out a merely linguistic or discursive analysis regarding Firehosing and the structure of the attacks by the Hate Office against Alexandre de Moraes. A minimally comprehensive analysis of topics such as Fake News, speech and disinformation must necessarily take into consideration issues relating to the disciplines of History, Psychology, Political Science and Law. This is, therefore, a transdisciplinary challenge – one that we will not shy away from.
