PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY OF THE ARUTANI LANGUAGE: AN ARTICULATORY, ACOUSTIC, SEGMENTAL AND SUPRASEGMENTAL ANALYSIS
isolated language; Arutani; phonetics and phonology; Juanita Martinez; documentation.
This work aims to analyze and describe the isolated Arutani language, also called Uruak or Awake. The work is being carried out within the scope of phonetics and phonology, both from an articulatory and acoustic perspective and from a segmental and suprasegmental perspective. The description and documentation of Arutani is important due to the fact that it is a language with few speakers and because, until recently, it was considered extinct. Our focus is on the speech of Juanita Martinez, an 81-year-old woman who is the last Arutani speaker recorded in Brazil. Therefore, this is research that aims to describe and document a language, but we also seek to value and preserve this language.
