RESUMO:

Wind energy is a rapidly growing renewable resource, yet the complexities of turbulence
in wind farms continue to challenge optimal turbine performance. Current studies
often rely on idealized inflow conditions that do not fully capture real-world turbulence
effects, leading to gaps in our understanding of wake interactions, aerodynamic
efficiency, and mechanical loads. This research proposal seeks to address these challenges
by investigating how turbulent boundary layer conditions impact multiple wind
turbines, with a particular focus on wake recovery, power generation, and structural
loads. The study will combine high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
simulations—employing Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) models
to analyze key turbulence characteristics such as integral length and time scales—with
controlled wind tunnel experiments using scaled turbine models. These experiments
are designed to validate the numerical results and provide deeper insights into how turbulence
intensity affects power output and wake behavior. Although the research is in
its preliminary stages, early findings are guiding further refinement of both the modeling
techniques and experimental design. The anticipated outcomes aim to enhance our
understanding of real-world turbulence effects on turbine efficiency, potentially leading
to improved wind farm layouts and operational strategies. This investigation is particularly
relevant for regions like Brazil, where complex wind conditions present both
significant challenges and exciting opportunities for optimizing wind energy systems.
