SUMMARY:

The root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica) are aggressive pathogens that impact the root system of plants, resulting in significant productivity losses. Reducing yield losses in crops is based on different methods, where crop rotation and genetic resistance stand out for their efficiency and low cost. A member of the Fabaceae family, cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) is an important tool to compose the crop rotation system, due to its characteristics of adaptation to hot zones, with low rainfall and rusticity, in addition to having high protein and energy value and to be a component of income generation. The genes Rk, Rk² and cb3, present in some cultivars, were accounted for conferring degrees of resistance to cowpea to the root-knot nematode, but some populations of the pathogen present in agricultural areas are virulent to specific resistance genes, making it necessary the search for other sources of resistance. The aim of the present study was to select sources of resistance to M. incognita and M. javanica and to characterize some of the Brazilian genotypes regarding their resistance. For this, 20 lines and 6 control genotypes of cowpea were used in the evaluation of resistance to M. incognita and 17 lines and 6 control genotypes for M. javanica where each plant was inoculated with 12,000 eggs and juveniles (J2) in an entirely randomized design with 6 replicates and 2 repetitions in time. The genotypes were evaluated 60 days after inoculation using the parameters: gall index (GI), root fresh mass (MFR), final egg and J2 population (PF), total eggs and J2/gram of root (NGR) and the reproduction factor (FR). The Fradinho MNC-06-895-1 genotype showed resistance to M. incognita and M. javanica, the Fradinho MNC-06-895-1 genotype also showed resistance to M. incognita, the other genotypes showed a reaction of susceptibility for both species. As a result of the expansion of the use of cowpea, the increase in areas infested with the pathogen and the need to position genetic resistance technologies, the results of this study contribute to breeding programs that seek new sources of resistance to the root-knot nematode, as well as indicated the need for further studies with other lines of cowpea and other Meloidogyne species.
